Much to do, see in our neck of the woods

Just as we are starting to have free time and the kids are out of school, gas prices are predictably on the rise. We are now paying about 50 cents a gallon more than we were paying just six months ago. This seasonal gouging corresponds to increased driving for family vacations.

This year, why not take what they are now calling a "staycation." We live in an area that thousands of people travel many miles to visit every year. And we bet there are attractions in Cochise County that you have never seen. It seems that we undervalue the place where we live. This is a good year to change that.

Many of us may take our area for granted. Try looking at Texas Canyon with the eyes of a tourist from Iowa. It is really quite remarkable, as is the Amerind Foundation, located just off the highway.

There is so much nearby to appreciate: the Willcox Playa and Dos Cabezas, Cochise Stronghold, the historic mines of Bisbee. Fort Huachuca bears a rich history of the Buffalo Soldiers. Old West Tombstone is fun no matter how many times you go. Willcox offers the Rex Allen and Marty Robbins museums, and St. David has Holy Trinity Monastery for those in a more contemplative frame of mind.

If you haven't been to Kartchner Caverns, the state just announced tour tickets from now until Sept. 4 are reduced. An adult cave tour ticket will be $12 while tickets for children 7-13 will be $5. Children aged 6 and younger are free. Ticket buyers will save $6.95 and $4.95, respectively, per ticket. That's a great deal for anyone who has never seen the cave or who would like to make a return visit to this beautiful site.

Tourism is good business for our area. It is also good for us to be highly aware of the attractions that draw people here. Whether it is bird watching along the San Pedro, hiking the trails in Ramsey Canyon, stargazing in the clear desert skies or learning about prehistoric animals at the mammoth kill site, our county contains a plentiful bounty for residents and visitors alike.

" Oh my Hur. Ben must have hit a soft spot with you. Did you try to get invited to the comedy troop and got turned down. Better luck next time. It appears you have the right attitude. "
