Quiburi Mission will soon have the capability to house and treat persons who are in the advanced stages of Alzheimer's disease.
"This is an exciting and much needed service for the citizens of Benson and a natural expansion on our overall mission," said Kaylene McGurk, Quiburi Mission's administrator. "It was a dream that has become a reality through the significant generosity of a private citizen of Benson. We feel blessed and are most appreciative."
A groundbreaking ceremony was held Friday at the facility at 850 S. Route S. Highway 80, with construction of the specialty care unit scheduled to begin late this month.
"Currently, the City of Benson does not offer a specialized residential setting for people experiencing the later stages of Alzheimer's disease. As the population ages the need for such a service locally has become greater," said McGurk. "The Good Samaritan Society recognizes how difficult it is for families to travel to other towns to visit with loved ones who are diagnosed with this devastating disease. Through the years Quiburi Mission has provided care and assistance to residents of Benson experiencing the beginning and mid stages of Alzheimer's within the limitations of the building's current design. With the remodel, Quiburi Mission will offer a specialized program designed specifically for patients experiencing the more advanced symptoms in a secured setting."
Quiburi Mission is part of the Evangelical Lutheran Good Samaritan Society, the nation's largest not-for-profit provider of senior care and services and has been part of the Benson community since 1986.
"This is a wonderful blessing for the community," said Ted Becker, regional director of the Evangelical Lutheran Good Samaritan Society.
