Council approves four items in short meeting
By Thelma Grimes
In a 17-minute meeting last Monday, the City Council donated the remainder of community funds to the Benson School District, and gave permission to the police and fire departments to apply for grants from the Tohono O'odham Nation.
The school district received $648 from the city to help fund the Making a Difference summer school program. Acting City Manager Brad Hamilton said the school was given all the money left in the community budget. Hamilton is acting manager because City Manager Glenn Nichols is on vacation.
The current fiscal year ends June 30. The new budget cycle begins July 1.
In an effort to find more grants in the state, the fire department will apply for $78,440 to purchase two cardiac monitors to help with the emergency medical services the department is now providing. The department is also asking for funding to upgrade extrication equipment.
The Tohono O'odham Nation has started a new program in 2009 to give directly to local governments, Fire Chief Keith Spangler said.
The police department is also requesting a grant for $9,600 to purchase four automatic external defibrillators.
To improve economic development, the council also unanimously approved spending $2,500 to become a member of the Tucson Regional Economic Opportunities Group.
