The Whelan School of Dance held its first annual Summer Recital June 13 at the Benson High School Auditorium. The theme was "Dance for a Cure" in honor of Geneva Whelan and all fighters and survivors of breast cancer, with all proceeds going to breast cancer research.

The dancers displayed a thorough knowledge of basic tap and ballet combinations as well as an understanding of jazz that they will continue to learn in the fall of 2009. The preschool level (ages 3-4) performed a tap and ballet dance, the princess level (5-7) also performed a tap and ballet dance and the elementary level (11-14) performed tap, ballet and jazz. More than $200 dollars was raised. Thank you Whelan family, students and parents, Mr. and Mrs. Frank Jones of The Tree House, the Tirza Whelan Dance Company, Heather Floyd, Jay Strickling and Stuart Washburn of the Sierra Southwest Cooperative's Graphics Department, Theresa Ramirez, Alyssa and Julia Dimas and Mary Merrill and Ruben Rowe of the Benson Unified School District
