The Benson City Council applauded members of the city gas department for receiving perfect marks on an annual audit required by the Arizona Corporation Commission (ACC).
In a June 15 letter, Robert Million, ACC pipeline safety supervisor, said the audit on the Benson gas department was conducted in May, and after a random review of records and pipeline facilities, "there were no probable noncompliance items noted during this year's audit."
City Manager Glenn Nichols said getting through an audit with a perfect score is tough to do, noting that the entire gas department deserved recognition for the accomplishment.
"This is really a positive thing for the gas department and the public works department," he said. "They have really done a good job."
The city is required to comply with an ACC audit annually, and Brad Hamilton, the city's director of public works, said the staff really worked hard to prepare for the audit, and he was pleased with there being no problems noted in the final findings.
"I am extremely proud of our staff," Hamilton said. "I have been through three audits, and they check everything from paperwork, to talking to staff, to going out in the field and looking at the equipment. There are usually little things noted. They did a great job this year."
Hamilton said he couldn't give the current staff all the credit, noting that improvements to the city gas department started many years ago under the direction of former City Manager Mark Battaglia, and continued with managers who followed.
Hamilton said all the work to replace steel pipelines with plastic and to improve services has paid off.
