artist at Gallery of Dreams
During the month of August, Gallery of Dreams in St. David, will feature the work of Tombstone resident and photographer Winona Sharp.
Sharp calls her manipulated photography "attention getters" because of the bright colors and added dimensions.
Sharp's work is on display at the Gallery of Dreams, 245 E. Patton (Highway 80) St., in St. David. For more information and hours contact the gallery at 720-2649.
Pomerene PTO hosts scholastic book fair
Pomerene PTO is hosting a scholastic book fair Aug. 24 through Aug. 28 at the Pomerene Post Office. The fair is open daily from 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. and open to the public.

fundraising dinner
VFW Post 6271, 233 E. 5th St., is hosting a fundraising dinner Friday, Aug. 21 from 5 p.m. to 6 p.m. Menu includes chicken-fried steak, mashed potatoes, gravy, vegetable, salad and roll.
Cost is a $6 donation to benefit VFW's color guard. For takeouts or more information, call 586-2197. Public welcome. Sunday bingo starts at 6 p.m. The kitchen for Sunday bingo is closed through Sept. 6.

Monthly meetings of the Cpl. George Salcido Detachment of the Marine Corps League will be held at VFW Hall, 233 E. 5th St. at 6:30 p.m. on the third Thursday of each month.

Benson Eagles Aerie No. 3593 hosts an array of activities including Tuesday night tacos from 4:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. Wednesday night bingo. Kitchen opens at 5 p.m. and card sales start at 5:30 p.m. Early bird play starts at 6 p.m.
Friday fish fry will be Aug. 21 from 4:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. The birthday bash is set for Saturday, Aug. 22 and will include horseshoes, barbecue and a covered dish dinner. Karaoke starts at 7 p.m.
The kidney fund raffle for a barbecue grill is on. Check with the Aerie for details, 586-3043.

The San Pedro River Arts Council, (formerly the Benson Arts Commission), is issuing a call to artists for works on paper only, with a western theme, to be hung in the City Hall Gallery in Benson. County Amateur Golf
Tournament upcoming
Find out who's the best in Cochise County. Sign up for the Sept. 12, and Sept. 13 Amateurs Golf Tournament open to the first 80 to sign up by Aug. 30.
Action will begin at the San Pedro Golf Course in Benson on Sept. 12 and will continue on Sept. 13 at the Pueblo Del Sol course in Sierra Vista.
Handicap required and proof of Cochise County residency or military proof is required at registration.
The two-day event costs $80 per person and will include cart and range balls.
Tournament proceeds benefit All the Kings Horses Children's Ranch in Benson, which provides a home for abused and neglected kids.Coordinators are also looking for sponsors of the event. For information call Terry Celentano at 586-7314.

Books in the sale room of Benson Public Library will cost half of the posted price during the month of August. For example, a hardback book usually priced 50 cents is 25 cents.
The sale features magazines, audios, CDs, DVDs and records. The library is located at 300 S. Huachuca St.

The Benson Elks Lodge will begin serving tacos and all the trimmings on Tuesdays. The complete taco plate will include different entrees and side dishes each week for $6.
Dinners served at the Masonic/Elks Lodge at 623 Foothill Dr., from 4:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. Profits benefit Benson's charities.

AARP Driver Safety
Program setting schedule
The American Association of Retired Persons (AARP) is setting up its summer schedule for the AARP Driver Safety Program (formerly AARP55 Alive/Mature Driving) for the Willcox and Benson areas.
This course is designed for drivers 50 years of age or older, but anyone may attend, and covers all aspects of the effects of aging as it relates to driving and how to compensate for these changes.

A women's interdenominational Bible study will meet Wednesday mornings from 9 a.m. to 11:15 a.m., beginning Sept. 16, at First Baptist Church, 983 S. Ocotillo Ave. Child care available for children age 2-5.
The study is on the book of Daniel with Beth Moore.
Bible study for men and women will begin Monday, Sept. 14, from 6:30 p.m. to 8:15 p.m. There is no child care available during this study group. Classes for women and children will begin Wednesday, Sept. 16. Nursery available for babies, and preschool-age children 2 to 5, with monitored study room for home-schooled students.

Sr. property valuation freeze application deadline
The Cochise County Assessor reminds Cochise County residents of the approaching Sept. 1 application filing deadline for the Senior Property Valuation Freeze Option. This option allows the property valuation of a primary home to be frozen for a three year period, and may remain frozen as long as the homeowner re-qualifies every three years.
To qualify, the homeowner must be 65 years of age, must have lived in the home for a minimum of two years, and the home owners annual total income must be below $32,352 for a single owner or $40,440 if two or more owners.
The income is based on total income from all sources, taxable and non-taxable, and must include all owners on the property title.
Application must be made on the Department of Revenue form DOR 82104. These forms are available from the assessor's office and must be filed with the required documentation at the assessor's office by Tuesday, Sept. 1. Call the Cochise County Assessors Office at (520) 432-8650 for information.
Middle San Pedro data presentations scheduled
USGS will tag team with Dr. Chris Eastoe, U of A GeoChem Lab for two presentations on recent data collected in the Middle San Pedro Area.
Kimberly Beisner, hydrologist, will provide information on USGS work related to water levels, water samples, and the geology of the basin.
Chris Eastoe, U of A Geochem Lab, will be presenting results of an 18-month study that describes groundwater ages and whether/where significant recent recharge to the aquifer has taken place. The carbon-14 data and additional water chemistry data help us better understand the sources of water in our regional aquifer.
Presentations will be made at the Community Watershed Alliance monthly meeting at Benson City Hall, Aug. 25, 6:30 p.m.

Mother Earth Yarn will be consigning at the Art & Quilting Gallery annex of the San Pedro Arts and Historical Society, 267 E. 5th St., No. 2. The gallery offers classes catered toward the community's desires the third Thursday of each month beginning Oct. 15, from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m.

Contest set for Sept. 19
Now in its fifth year, the Sierra Vista Fiddle Contest will provide a day of music and entertainment on Saturday, Sept. 19 at the Veterans Memorial Park bandshell, featuring fiddlers from throughout the Southwest compete for more than $3,000 in cash prizes. Admission is free.
