As the Benson/San Pedro Valley Chamber of Commerce transitions from a social organization to offering services to members, a recent election also put new board members in place.
Steve Sacco was elected president of the chamber. Sacco will take the place of Kim Lockhart, who opted not to run for another term. Lockhart has served the chamber for several years.
Sacco, a member of the chamber since 2005, owns Postal Annex in the Prickly Pear Shopping Center in front of Wal-Mart.
Sacco said the newly-elected board is going to work hard to increase membership in the chamber, and do a lot more for local businesses.
Sacco said of the more than 500 businesses in the area, 60 are chamber members. Sacco said many business owners don't feel the chamber does anything for them.
To change that, Sacco said they are looking at a "bargain basket" for members that will include more advertising, more focus on the chamber Web site that receives thousands of hits per month and possibly publishing a chamber listing that will feature more local businesses.
Executive Director Bob Mucci agrees with Sacco, stating "there's a lot of energy and the board and executive board wants to get the chamber back to where it was a couple years ago. We don't just want to provide some social setting, we want to provide actual services."
Sacco said he is excited about the amount of energy being shown by the newly elected board.
Other members elected to the chamber's executive board include new vice president James Lawrence of Govesnet, Dennis Goeglein of Coldwell Banker is the treasurer and Beverly Pursell of Arrowhead Realty, is the secretary.
Other board members include Sharon Gilman of the Cochise College Center for Economic, Don Grafues of Vermilion Realty and James Lawrence of Raytheon.
Mucci said besides increasing membership in the coming year, they are going to work on upgrading the Chamber Web site at www.bensonchamberaz.com.
