In a short meeting on Thursday, Bryan Bullington, Benson High School principal, told governing board members he was pleased with enrollment numbers for the new school year.
With more than 90 students in the freshmen, sophomore and junior classes, Bullington said he was encouraged.
"We have had a really good start to the school year," he said. "Enrollment is around 371; our numbers are equitable for the first three grades, and I haven't seen more than 90 in the junior class in a long time. We hope to have 90 students in next year's senior class."
In the breakdown, Bullington said there are currently 95 freshmen, 94 sophomores and 94 juniors.
For the high school, the board unanimously approved hiring Weston Schmidt as the new science teacher and Melissa Newton was approved in the special education department.
David Woodall, superintendent of the district, said late in the summer they had some unexpected resignations and the two teaching positions needed to be filled immediately. Woodall said he was pleased with Schmidt and Newton.
The board also approved a measure to designate longtime business teacher Tina Gudvangen as the director of the high school's Career and Technical Education Department for the 2009-10 school year. It was a contract renewal, as Gudvangen also held the position last year.
The board also approved hiring a new kindergarten teacher for the primary school. Woodall said the new position had to be created after they got the final number of students attending kindergarten.
Woodall said parents need to sign their children up for kindergarten as early as they can over the summer, but many parents came in two weeks or a week before school.
Woodall said they started with two teachers that were expected to have about 20 students apiece, but with nearly 80 students enrolled, they had to have another teacher.
