City: Contractor causes gas outage for residents
Thelma Grimes/San Pedro Valley News-Sun
About a dozen residents had their gas shut off Thursday night as Benson crews worked to repair a damaged line on Land Street.
Brad Hamilton, the city's public works director, said Stagecoach Trails, a manufactured home park, was preparing a lot for a new trailer and had a contractor come in to prepare the utility lines.
Hamilton said apparently the contractor neglected to get the property blue staked, which means marking where existing utility lines are located before work is conducted.
Hamilton, who said the final reports will be in this week, said the contractor drove a pick into the ground, hitting a two-inch gas line owned by the city. Gas and fire crews were immediately dispatched to the scene.
Hamilton said about a dozen residents were without gas for between three and four hours while city crews worked to repair the damaged line.
Because of the seriousness of the incident, Hamilton said a report will be filed with the Arizona Corporation Commission and they will determine how to proceed.

" The contractor works for Dianne Tipton that should be your first clue. For a women who is "above the rules" she also picks a contractor who is not willing to follow the rules. "

" I'm beginning to think that some of these idiots that are backing Tipton really don't know how to read or to add. Look at the comments regarding the zoning. Way to go Tipton, nothing like having the elderly go without gas for hours because you refuse to hire someone that actually is worth their money. Nice AND AGAIN UNDERHANDED! Is there a state or government agency that protects our elderly? If so please follow up with the homeowners at Stagecoach Park. I think they need someone to step in and watch out for their rights. "
