1 killed in fiery rollover crash in Mescal

Alcohol is suspected in an early-morning truck fire Saturday that claimed the life of one man.
The Pima County Sheriff's Department requested assistance from Mescal-J6 Fire District at 1:38 a.m. in the 25,100 block of E. Navajo and E. Arapaho trails. Pima County Sheriff's Department spokeswoman Dawn Barkman said the eastbound Chevrolet pickup rolled at least once then caught fire after the driver apparently lost control of the vehicle.
Barkman said there were two occupants in the truck, noting detectives are working to determine who was driving.
Mescal-J6 Fire District Chief Warren Neff said when they arrived on scene the truck was fully involved and the fire had begun to spread to nearby brush.
Once the fire was fully contained, fire crews were released at about 3:30 a.m., said Neff. At about 5:30 a.m., Neff was paged to return to the scene by on-site deputies for body extrication, he said.
Neff said when the tow truck arrived to remove the vehicle, a body was found underneath the pickup. The victim was burned beyond recognition, he said.
Neff said it appears the deceased was ejected, and the truck landed on him when it rolled.
Barkman said the other occupant of the vehicle had gone to a nearby home to find help. Barkman said the survivor has said he didn't know the deceased well, and that identification of the body would be done through DNA testing.
In addition to working to identify the deceased, Barkman said deputies are also trying to determine who was driving.
Barkman said the survivor's name is not being released at this time as the investigation remains ongoing.
