The Benson Bobcats' soccer team may be turning some heads early this season, as they have dominated several opponents already, won some close games and taken second place in a big Phoenix tournament.

Last week, the Bobcats improved their record, dominating San Miguel last Tuesday.

Coach Gary Douglas said in the first half the Bobcats started off "sluggish," but still got the ball in the goal, with Gavin Meeks scoring on an assist from Marcos Macias.

However, the Bobcats gave up a penalty kick, allowing San Miguel to tie the game at 1-1 at halftime.

In the second half, Haley Choate got things going for the Bobcats, scoring on an assist from Ramiro Olivarez. Nathan Borders scored the next two goals, one on an assist from Macias, to give the Bobcats a 4-1 lead.

Javier Macias and Vicente Macias scored two more goals, pushing the Bobcats to a 6-1 victory.

On Saturday, the Bobcats traveled to Tucson to take on a tough Desert Christian team.

In a tight game, the Bobcats caught a break late in the first half when Guy Black shot at the goal, and the ball deflected to Marcos Macias, who put the ball in to score, giving the Benson a 1-0 lead.

The second half remained intense, as the Bobcats' defense was able to keep Desert Christian from scoring, to take the 1-0 victory.

Goalkeeper Kjel Gudvangen stepped up his game in the victory, having 7 saves in to preserve the shutout.

"It was a great all-around effort by Benson," Douglas said. "I'm very proud of the progress we've made. We still have some work to do, but wins like this show we are headed in the right direction.

The Bobcats will have another tough match on Thursday, when they will host the home opener against rival Willcox. The game will be at the Benson football field, starting at 4 p.m.
