The Benson Bobcats' volleyball team got their first win of the season last week, defeating 2A East opponent Tombstone 3-1.
It was a close battle, as the Bobcats edged out the Lady Yellow Jackets in the first game, 27-25, and again in the second game, 25-23.
In the third game, the Yellow Jackets cut the Bobcats' lead to 2-1, winning 25-21, but the Bobcats put the contest away in the fourth game, winning 25-18.
Chelsey Layton led the victory, scoring 14 points, to go along with 9 kills and 19 assists. Cheyanne Blaschke scored 10 points, and had 2 aces, 6 kills and 9 digs. Sarah Kading had 9 points, 6 kills, 14 assists and 7 digs.
"We are beginning to pass a little better," said Coach Kimberly East. "We still need to lower our unforced errors. These girls are capable of playing intense, powerful, exciting volleyball. I am hoping they will continue to improve and be playing with a championship caliber attitude."
However, things did not go as well against conference rival Willcox on Thursday, when the Bobcats lost 3-1.
After being dominated 25-12 in the first game, and losing 25-18 in the second, the Lady Bobcats got back into the competition, winning the third game 25-20.
However, Willcox was able to stay on track and put the match away, winning the fourth game 25-16.
Layton and Brittney Johnson led the Bobcats' efforts with 10 points each. Layton also had 7 assists and 1 kill. Johnson had 10 digs.
Beca Ames and Kading had 8 points each.
"We did better with our passing, we just couldn't get the kill," East said. "We also were lacking with our blocking. Willcox has several tall girls who hit really well. We need to block better to contain that power. This team continues to improve and work hard. Safford and Pima next week will be extremely tough and an excellent test for us."
Pima is the new addition to 2A East competition this season, and with a 1-3 record, the Lady Bobcats look to get back on track.
The Bobcats will host Pima Thursday night, starting at 6 p.m.
