By virtue of Friday's 60-20 win over previously unbeaten Fort Thomas, the St. David Tigers made a profound statement sure to resonate throughout the region's Class 1A ranks.
The Tigers dispatched the visiting Apaches with relative ease. Dallon Murray ran for 148 yards, including a 50-yard gallop on the Tigers' first play from scrimmage with 7:56 left in the first quarter that gave St. David a lead it would not relinquish. Tyler Davis added the PAT kick for the early 7-0 lead.
After the Apache's next possession stalled out on downs, quarterback Davis connected with Jordan Tracey on a 36-yard pass play with 4:44 left in the first quarter. Davis booted the PAT kick for the 14-0 lead.
The Apaches, No. 1 in the 1A East Region, drove down into St. David territory but a fired up Tiger defense held.
St. David's final score of the quarter came on a 9-yard run by Murray with under a minute remaining in the first quarter. The PAT kick attempt failed and the Tigers led 20-0 at the end of the first quarter.
The Tigers managed seven second-quarter points, while the defensive unit again rose to the occasion, forcing the Apaches into 4th-and-long situations. The only score of the quarter came on an 8-yard run by Jeremy Gillete with 8:49 remaining in the first half. Davis added the PAT kick for a 27-0 lead at the end of the first half.
The Apaches managed to get an offensive drive going in the third quarter but Braden Murray intercepted a pass in the end zone and returned the ball near midfield at the 32-yard line.
The Tigers ended up fumbling the ball away and the Apaches would get on the scoreboard with 10:34 remaining in the third quarter when Carlos Mesa scored on a 1-yard plunge.
St. David would score 14 third-quarter points. Tracey scored on a 25-yard pass from Davis with 9:35 left in the quarter. Davis added the PAT kick for a commanding 34-6 lead. "That's what we call execution," a pleased assistant coach Beck Mayberry said to the Tigers in their post-game huddle.
Head coach Brett Davis was equally pleased but warned the Tigers that the victory was nothing more than another step toward their ultimate goal.
"We did a nice job and we stepped up, but really we just took one more step, that's it," said Davis. "It was a good effort and that was a big game for us. They're [Ft. Thomas] a power in the east. Dallon [Murray] ran the ball well and our defense did a great job."
Tyler Davis completed 7-of-9 pass attempts for 136 yards and four touchdowns. The Tigers rushed for 266 total yards.
Defensively Braden Murray and Dallon Murray were in on 14 and 13 tackles respectively while Gillette added 12 and Ben Allred 9.
