The annual Butterfield Stage Days celebration will be held this weekend in Benson, with plenty of entertainment and activities planned for all ages to enjoy.

Hosted by the Benson/San Pedro Valley Chamber of Commerce, Executive Director Bob Mucci said the celebration would feature live music, fun and vendors.

The annual Butterfield celebration is held in tribute to the days in 1857 when the Butterfield Overland Mail Company first transported mail and passengers from St. Louis to San Francisco.

En route to their destination, the Overland trail included a stage station in what is now Benson.

The weekend's events begin Saturday at 10 a.m. with the parade in town. The annual parade is hosted by the GFWC-AZ Benson Juniors and features Grand Marshal Dick Hamilton, a longtime resident and former mayor.

After the parade, the celebrations will begin at the Lions Park, including the Pony Express, with riders delivering U.S. mail to Dragoon Post Office, some 20 miles east of Benson, to go with a day full slate of events and musical entertainment.

This year, Mucci said they want to get back to Butterfield's roots and really make it more of a western-themed celebration.

Geoff Oldfather, a 1974 Benson High School graduate and current public relations director at Arizona Electric Power Cooperative, will emcee the days' events.

Besides the two-day celebration at Lions Park, the Benson Butterfield Rodeo Committee will host the rodeo at the Arena Bar in west Benson. The rodeo is one of the newer additions to the annual celebration, and draws large crowds each year.

Committee member Heather Floyd said the kids' competition will begin at 3 p.m. and the opening ceremonies and other events start at 5 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 10.

The car show, which continues to grow in popularity, will be held Sunday.

" I would like to put a booth up for Butterfield stage days, do you know who I would contact?

It would be for Corn Roasting.

Thank you,

Phyllis "
