The San Pedro Valley News-Sun received first-place honors for General Excellence from the Arizona Newspaper Association, to go along with 13 other newspaper and individual honors received.

The state's best newspapers, reporters and photographers were recognized Saturday night, in Phoenix during the annual ANA Better Newspaper Contest.

General Excellence awards are given to newspapers that win the most awards in advertising and editorial categories. The News-Sun tied for first place with the Arizona Capitol Times.

After winning six awards in the Better Advertising Contest earlier this year, on Saturday, the News-Sun received six more awards for editorial excellence, including two first-place honors for Page Design Excellence, and Departmental News Coverage and Copy Editing Excellence.

In the non-daily categories, the News-Sun won second-place honors for Journalistic Achievement and third-place honors for Reporting and News Writing Excellence, and Best Use of Photography.

Publisher Jane Amari commended the News-Sun staff for all their hard work over the last year. The newspaper categories are a reflection of the hard work of the entire News-Sun staff, which includes Amari, Managing Editor Chris Dabovich, Senior Reporter Thelma Grimes, Advertising Director Sha-nnon Kirkwood, Ian Kirkwood and Sue Coons in the production department, Susan Perry in the business department and Ashton Estrada in classified.

In the individual categories, Senior Reporter Thelma Grimes won two first-place awards, two second-place and two third-place awards.

The first-place awards were for Best Sports Column and for Best News-Feature story.

The big winner of the night was Dave Brown, who won the non-daily Photographer of the Year award. Brown, who primarily works in Willcox with the Arizona Range News, also won the award for work in Benson.

Brown also received a second-place award for Best Sports Photograph, where he captured a shot of a Benson pitcher last year.

" Way to go Thelma and everyone at the News-Sun! Excellent work. "

" Wick Papers must be really hard up for someone to give awards to, if the best they can do is Thelma Grimes, Jane Amari and the News Sun. I haven't seen real investigative reporting there since Kathleen Shull left years ago. The quality got worse with Grimes, abysmal with Amari, and just keeps going downhill. "

" Who nominates and who is voting on these awards ? What is the criteria? Surely it is not honest and ethical reporting. Must be slim pickens out there to give awards to. When I start reading unbiased, news articals that are substatiated with facts, I might change my opinion. This is a disgrace to the journalistic profession. "
