Alcohol may have played role in highway fatality
Benson man, 30, killed after being ejected from vehicle en route from Halloween party
Thelma Grimes/San Pedro Valley News-Sun
Alcohol and excessive speed are suspected in the rollover crash that occurred on State Route 80 Saturday, killing 30-year-old Benson resident Mark Flaming.
Benson Police Chief Paul Moncada said the Department of Public Safety contacted them around 10:10 p.m. about the possible crash, and officers found a 2010 Volkswagen off the highway around milepost 295.5.
Moncada said once it was agreed that it was Benson Police jurisdiction, officers began investigating the single-car crash. Flaming's body had been ejected from the vehicle.
Moncada said Flaming, who was the driver, was pronounced dead at the scene.
Moncada said police know that Flaming was returning home to Benson after attending a Halloween party in St. David.
Moncada said the investigation is still ongoing, but they do suspect that Flaming had been drinking at the party, and speeding on the highway on his way home.

" It's not time for blame. He was an adult and it was his decision to drink and speed. Still a sad situation. "

" It sounds to me like the one who "should be held accountable" paid with his life. Is that not payment enough? It was a dumb decision and luckily there were no innocent people traveling on the same road. His foolish decision could have caused many more tragedies than just his own! "

" Relatively same scenerioon July 4 2005.... My cousin Will Scott was approached by BPD 3 times that day and the final time about 20 min before his life ending accident on Airport road... He was stopped for speeding through town, and then a short while later.... everyoneknows what happened. "

" Agree with anonymous.
By law, the owner of the home is at least partially liable for allowing someone to leave his house drunk.
While not all of the blame can be shifted, the homeowners and other attendees of the party aren't completely without responsibility here, either.
Rest in peace, Mark. "

DISAGREE wrote on Oct 29, 2009 8:00 PM:
" As I was an invited guest to the party in St David, I do have a valid opinion. First, the party was held forfamily and friends, and Mark was a friend of a friend. He showed up at the party and left 15-30 minutes later. If he was drunk (which is still speculation) he DID NOT get that way at the party that is being referred to. Shame on the PD (Moncada) for not investigating further before putting that type of information in the newspaper! There is much more to this story than any of us know. Hopefully when the investigation is complete, the PD and the newspaper will run a corrections story and the truth will come out!!! Absolutely a tragedy, but blaming others does no good!!! "
Can we show some sensitivity wrote on Oct 30, 2009 10:44 AM:
" It's too bad that when someone lives a nice, long life, we write about how wonderful they were and about the children & family they have left behind. But when a tragedy occurs and one's life is ended too soon - this is all that is written - ending the article with what they "suspected" had happened, then going on to blame others.
Does anyone want to address the fact that blood & latex gloves were left on the site of the accident - I've never been to a accident scene, is this a common practice (just wondering)? Quite unsettling. I am thankful that no one else was hurt in the accident.
If you want us to learn a lesson about not drinking & driving or speeding - we got it. But show a little respect for the man who lost his life and those he left behind- it was an Accident (by definition: something that occurs unexpectedly or unintentionally), we don't know exactly what happened or why and we shouldn't place blame on others unknowingly.
Those who knew him, loved him and he will be missed. Rest in Peace, Mark. "

It probably never occurred that this guy's mother, widow or kids may read your insensitive brain droppings one day.
Get over yourselves and wish those left behind some comfort. "

" Hey Kato! Miss you dude...and I agree here with "Can We" and "xulu", most of these people spewing hate and trash would have been humbled if they would have seen (as I did) his daughters watching him being lowered into his grave!!
And how many of you have made similar mistakes in your youth? Or even driven tired, unfocused, or distracted?
Let's remember that this was a loss of a life, and no matter how it ocurs- it is the greatest loss of all. "
