Retired Benson Postmaster, Ysidro "Sid" Quihuis, 70, passed away after a brief illness at Tucson's St. Mary's Hospital on Nov. 6, 2009. Sid was born in Benson, Ariz. on Jan. 29, 1939.
Sid was preceded in death by his loving wife, Alma Quihuis; father, Ysidro Quihuiz Sr.; mother, Herlinda Gastelum Quihuiz; sisters, Amparo and Socorro and brother, Librado Quihuis. He is survived by his sons: Daniel Quihuis (Toni), Robert Quihuis (Cyndi) and Dan Eric (Sandra); his daughters: Laura Quihuis-Russell and Diana Vaughn (Robert); his love Consuelo Garza (and Bebe and Chiquita); brother, Joe Quihuis, sisters, Rita Bonillas and Connie Reyna; 12 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren; and by family and friends everywhere.
Sid grew up in Tucson, and upon graduating from Pueblo High School in 1958, enlisted in the U.S. Air Force and served eight years. Sid was a Military Police and served part of his duty in the Vietnam War. Air Force assignments led him to San Antonio, Texas, where he met his wife, Alma. They married in 1960 in Penitas, Texas and spent the next six years in various military stations around the world.
In 1966, Sid was hired by the U.S. Postal Service and worked as a mail carrier in Tucson, Ariz. Over the years he was promoted various times and in 1983, ultimately landed his dream job as Postmaster for his hometown of Benson, Ariz. He was recognized nationally many times, not only for his work as Postmaster, but as a strong and vocal leader in the Hispanic community. He retired in 1992 to take on a new challenge: fighting and eventually surviving leukemia. Although Sid was successful, unfortunately his loving wife, Alma, succumbed to cancer in 1993 after a long battle.
Since then, Sid has lived his life to the fullest and has brought his loved ones too many great memories, too many funny jokes and far too many smiles to ever remember. He enjoyed playing golf with his friends, going to the casino every chance he got, traveling the world, doing crossword puzzles and spending time with his family.
Sid will be missed more than words can describe. If you knew him, you are truly blessed to have had him in your life. We love you Dad, Tata, Babe, Brother, Tio, and Compadre.
Visitation will be held Wednesday, Nov. 11, 2009, 4 p.m. to 10 p.m. at Carrillo's Tucson Mortuary (South Chapel), 204 S. Stone Ave., with Rosary recited at 7 p.m. Mass will be offered Thursday, Nov. 12, 2009, 10 a.m., at St. John's Church, 602 W. Ajo Way. Interment to follow at Holy Hope Cemetery.
