St. David volleyball coach Tylene Miller said the 2009 squad put forth an "unbelievable" effort over the weekend in their quest for the 1A state football title.
But the 1A South Region Champions came up short in a hard-fought semifinal contest against Valley Lutheran.
"They put everything they had on the court," Miller said Monday. "They should be proud of what they did this weekend."
The state tournament started on a good note for the Lady Tigers as they defeated Bagdad 3-0, 25-18, 25-21 and 25-13.
Kaydee McWhorter led the victory with 23 points, 1 ace, 2 kills and 15 assists.
Amorette Jacquez came up perfect at the serving line, going 16 for 16.
In the second round, the Lady Tigers took on Mogollon, in another 3-0 domination. The Tigers held together in three close games, winning 25-21, 25-23 and 25-22.
Kayla Carpenter led the victory with 15 points, 2 blocks and 10 kills.
In the final Tigers' contest of the season, the ladies fell to Valley Lutheran 3-1.
They lost the first game 25-21, but bounced back in the second, winning 26-24.
The third game was stretched out, with both teams fighting to take a lead, but Apache came out on top, winning 28-26, and then shut down the Tigers in the fourth to win the match.
McWhorter led the Tigers' efforts, scoring 23 points in the match, along with 19 assists.
"We have ended an outstanding year," Miller said. "I am so proud of the Lady Tigers. They went down to state ready to play, and play they did. The Tigers left it all on the court, they gave it their all. They played one point at a time, one game at a time, one match at a time and one heart beat at a time. The Lady Tigers are forever strong."
