Commentary: Bobcats need support
Thelma Grimes/San Pedro Valley News-Sun
It doesn't matter what the sport is, when the playoffs come around and a team can play at home, there is a true advantage.
However, that advantage is lost when the stands are not full of screaming fans.
On Friday, the Benson Bobcats host tough Valley Christian Academy, a Phoenix-based private school, in the second round of the 2A state football championship playoffs.
There is no doubt that Benson deserves to be in the game, winning the 2A East Conference title for the third consecutive year.
But there are some doubters, especially in Phoenix, whether the small public school can beat the private school.
With that in mind, the Benson Booster Club is not only asking that the community fill the stands and cheer on their team Friday night, they are asking businesses, residents and community to sport the Bobcats' colors on "wear a red shirt Friday," in support of this team that has worked hard to stay on top the last three seasons. Be there for the 7 p.m. game Friday night to show what a rural community is capable of when it comes to supporting their schools.
