Police probe school knife incident

A Benson High School senior had to be physically restrained last week after allegedly throwing a knife at another student during a culinary arts class.

School administrators said while the incident remains under investigation, they do know that while a substitute teacher was in the class, two students began to argue, and the female student became angry. She allegedly hit the male student and spit in his face, then threw a serrated steak knife from one of the kitchen work stations toward him. The knife did not hit the student, sticking into the floor in front of him.

The substitute ran for help to the office of Principal Bryan Bullington and Dean of Students James Driggers.

Bullington escorted the student out of the classroom. At that point, Superintendent David Woodall said she began to argue with Bullington and was trying to go back into the classroom to get her things.

Bullington refused to let her back into the classroom, and again, the student lost her temper.

Woodall said Bullington continued to stand in front of the student, telling her to get back into the office. However, she became aggressive, and after elbowing Bullington, the principal was forced to hold the student down until Student Resource Officer Gary Douglas could take her into custody.

Administrators did not release the student's name and did not disclose what the two students were fighting about.

"The school is completing the investigation and strong disciplinary action will be taken. Obviously we do not condone this type of conduct," Bullington said.

Woodall called the incident unfortunate, noting that the school has been working with the student.

"We are looking into the matter and certainly don't want anything like this to happen again," Woodall said. "

Benson Police Chief Paul Moncada said Monday charges have not been filed pending completion of the police report.

" Let me get this right. The teacher left the class room when a knife fight was in progress putting the lives of the rest of the students at risk.I thought there were hot lines in the class rooms. Way to lead by example "

" Interesting where is my comment it threatened no one personally" nor is on factual because everything I had written came from the article in the paper. Are you saying your article is not correct?
Censorship does not suit you well. It's only an opinion" "

" Benson schools have alot of issues with teachers ,substitute or not. They are not professionals the way they treat, teach and talk to students. This is the examples the student sees and gets so they get temptated they can do whatever or act however they please. I think Benson schools just hire teachers or sub without investigation or supervising the way they actually teach or act in the classrooms. I agree not all kids are to blame for others bad behavior but the examples have to com from the "so called PROFESSIONAL TEACHER" and it's not happening within the Benson schools. I think someone really need to put these teachers including subs on check!!! "

" The teacher SHOULD have went over to the student & restrained her using what ever force necessary to control her until the police could get on the scene.Atempted murder is a very serious thing unfortunately in this day & age it is not politically correct to use a paddle on a child & since they stopped you can now see where that has gotten to. Case in point "

" i'm a student at the school, and just so you know the teacher didnt leave the classroom without the knife. she took it with her. nothing here is the teachers fault. the story written here leaves out much more than what really happened. "

" In reference to the comment made by 'opinionated', i have seen kids in action; at the wal-mart, the park etc. These kids talk to their parents/guardians with no respect. They also behave and dress in public as though they have no respect for themselves and don't understand boundaries. It appears as though the ones that need to be put in 'check' are the ones raising these students. If the true 'examples' (parents/guardians) do their home-training at home, these students would know and show a little more respect--not only for the teachers in our public schools, but for themselves and others. Many so called 'parents' send their children to school expecting the teachers to do what the parent is supposed to do--raise their children. I have also witnessed some students that display manners, respect for their parents, authority and respect for themselves. It's great to see that some parents still take their parenting job seriously, and do it well. The majority of the time, students are a reflection of the ones raising them. "

" Having worked as a Substitute in public schools, I have to agree with Stacey...parental guidance is lacking in many students these days. Todays students have very little understanding of morals , ethics or etiquette or the concept of personal responsibility. These are things that should be (and used to be) taught in the home or at least modeled by the parents. "
