COMMENTARY: Cochise College has touched many lives
J.D. Rottweiler/Cochise College
My travels around Cochise County have put me in touch with numerous individuals who graduated from or attended Cochise College. From our earliest grads to our most recent, all of them have a soft spot in their hearts that was created by the experience they had here. This is a wonderful position for Cochise College to occupy, and we are in the early stages of formalizing the ways that we reconnect with our former students.
As consumers of our educational services, alumni can be one of our most vital resources. No other group can more credibly testify to the quality and value of the education provided at Cochise College. Their professional experiences have the potential to shape a network students can tap for advice. Their linkages with the community and the larger world can help keep us focused on our mission.
The college has awarded more than 22,000 degrees and certificates to 17,000-plus people since the 1965-66 school year. These numbers don't include the thousands of others who enrolled in a few classes or otherwise consider themselves friends of the college.
And these folks are everywhere! Fans of a new Cochise College Alumni Facebook page reside locally and in other parts of Arizona, and as far away as Colorado, Florida, Georgia, Louisiana, North Carolina, Ohio, Texas, Washington, and Mexico. They work in county government and local schools, as well as in hospitals, aviation facilities and professional offices across the country.
With fluctuating legislative support and funding resources, we need this group to advocate with us and for us. Recent interviews with graduating students demonstrate their intent to remain engaged and supportive of Cochise College. Giving back is high on their priority list, and their desire to continue to be involved with the college takes many forms, from mentoring students and speaking to classes, to serving on boards or committees and volunteering as ambassadors for the college.
If you are a former Cochise College student, or a friend of the college, I hope you'll get involved with our new alumni program. We have organized founding leaders and are in the process of developing a charter around which we can operate. Cochise College Alumni is now collecting fans on Facebook, and the new college Web site will also help us tell the stories of our former students when it is launched in the new year. One of our most challenging initial projects will be connecting in meaningful ways with alumni in the Cochise County communities we serve.
Being in a rural area presents special challenges in engaging our alumni, but it also presents special opportunities to open new doors. Cochise College looks forward to reconnecting with you. Tell us your story at alumni@cochise.edu.
