Man killed after being hit by train

A 52-year-old Benson man was killed Wednesday after he was struck by a Union Pacific freightliner, authorities said.
Benson Police Chief Paul Moncada identified the victim as Angel M. Gomez. He said Gomez had lived in Benson for less than a year.
Gomez was struck by the westbound train between the Patagonia Street and N. Ocotillo Road crossings shortly after 4 p.m., said Moncada.
Authorities were notified by Union Pacific Railroad personnel at 4:10 p.m. Nov. 18 that the train had struck a pedestrian. Police found Gomez's body around the 300 block of W. 4th Street.
According to the train crew, Gomez had crossed the tracks from the south side to the north, and had apparently turned around to pick up something he had dropped. Unable to stop the train, crews said he was hit while retrieving the unknown object.
Moncada said the incident remains under investigation, noting the item that Gomez was attempting to get was not found.
