Skip Whitley, an attorney with 36 years experience in southern Arizona, has been chosen to fill the position as Corporate Counsel for Arizona's G&T Cooperatives.

Whitley replaces former corporate counsel Patrick Ledger, who was recently promoted to chief operating officer of Southwest Transmission Cooperative (SWTC).

In addition to working in private practice, Whitley has served as general counsel for the board of directors of Sierra Southwest Cooperative Services, Inc., a position he's held since 2001. Prior to that he served as general counsel to the board of directors of Arizona Electric Power Cooperative (AEPCO).

Arizona's G&T Cooperatives include AEPCO, SWTC and Sierra Southwest Cooperative Services and in Whitley's new position he will serve as corporate counsel for all three. The cooperatives are based in Benson; AEPCO owns and operates the 557 (net) MW generating station in Cochise, Arizona.

"Skip Whitley brings a diverse and extensive field of experience to his new position and because of his experience with our various boards is extremely knowledgeable about the challenges facing electric cooperative utilities," said Don Kimball, CEO of Arizona's G&T Cooperatives.

Robert Hewlett, chief operating officer of Sierra Southwest Cooperative Services, Inc., said Whitley "is the right person for the right job at the right time."

"America's electric cooperatives are at a crossroads and facing challenges in every area as we deal with climate change legislation, escalating energy and transportation costs and anticipating the energy needs of the future," Hewlett said.

"Skip has just the right legal background to help move us forward as we meet those challenges," Hewlett said.

Whitley said he was eager for those challenges.

"The cooperatives have always been my favorite client and I've always wanted to play a larger role in helping them move ahead. Now I can do that and I'm just really happy to be here," Whitley said.

Whitley is actively involved in community issues and is board chairman for the Beacon Group, the non-profit Tucson-based organization that provides vocational training and helps find jobs for people with developmental disabilities, both physical and mental.

"It's one of the most fulfilling things in my life and the people I work with, both staff and our clients, are wonderful. It's important that we all find ways to try and make a difference," Whitley said.

Whitley is a 1973 graduate of the University of Arizona College of law; he received his Bachelor of Arts degree in Political Science in 1970, also from the University of Arizona.
