San Pedro Valley High

School graduation Dec. 17

San Pedro Valley High School will recognize its December 2009 graduates during the semi-annual Graduation Ceremony & Recognition Night Thursday, Dec. 17, at 6 p.m. at Cochise College, Benson Center.

Kristy Reynolds, Grades 7-12 School Social Counselor will deliver the keynote address. Stephanie Clayton is the student speaker, while a staff speaker has yet to be determined.


Graduates include Leanna Barlow, Evan Bowen, Kalvin Catlin, Stephanie Clayton, Josh Hippensteel, C.J. Johnson, David Merten, Luis Meza, Levi Ramirez, Shalena Solis, Ashley Stapleton.

Students of the month, Kalvin Catlin, August; Alysha Pirtle, September; along with October, November, and December Students of the Month (TBD). Students on the Honor Roll, with exemplary attendance, and students who have passed the AIMS test, will be recognized as well.

Breakfast with Santa at Holy Trinity Monastery

Holy Trinity Monastery (mile marker 302.5 Highway 80, St. David) is hosting its Second Annual 'Breakfast with Santa' on Saturday, Dec. 19 from 8:30 a.m. to 10 a.m. Breakfast will be served until 9:30 a.m. and includes pancakes (pecan and plain) sausage, juice and coffee. Afterwards kids will visit with Santa, help Mrs. Claus decorate a cookie and enjoy fun activities with Santa's elves.

Cost is $3.50 for children, no charge for children under 2, $5 adults, with a maximum of $18 per family. Photos with Santa will be available for $2. Holiday goodies will also be for sale.

Christmas concert at Seventh-day Adventist

The public is invited to a Christmas concert titled "The Night Heaven Kissed Earth," on Saturday, Dec. 19, at 7 p.m., at the Seventh-day Adventist Church on the corner of 6th and Patagonia streets.

Refreshments served following the presentation.

Little Homestead presents Christmas show Dec. 19

Country music band Little Homestead, along with friends, present "Christmas on the Homestead," a Christmas show on Saturday, Dec. 19 at 7 p.m. Doors open at 6:30 p.m. at Community Bible Church, 714 S. J6 Ranch Rd. There is no charge for the family-oriented show.

H1N1 flu shots offered

Friday at Quiburi Mission

Residents wanting to receive H1N1 vaccinations can get them Friday, Dec. 18 from 8 a.m. to noon at Quiburi Mission Samaritan Center, 850 S. State Route 80.

Vaccinations administered by the Cochise County Health Department are free of charge. Doses will be administered on a first-come, first-served basis. The Medicine Shoppe and Safeway pharmacy will soon be offering H1N1 vaccinations to adults age 18 and older only. These pharmacies should be contacted directly for further details. Cochise County will publish updates, as needed, on its Web site at cochise.az.gov/h1n1. Updated information about swine flu in the U.S. can be found at www.cdc.gov/h1n1flu/. Arizona-specific information about swine flu can be found at www.azdhs.gov/flu/h1n1/. Basic clinic information can be found at the Health Department's H1N1 hotline at 520-432-9410.

VFW fundraising

dinner Friday

VFW Post 6271, 233 E. 5th St., is hosting its fundraising dinner on Friday, Dec. 18, from 5 p.m. to 6 p.m. at the Post Hall, 233 E. 5th St. Menu includes chicken-fried steak, mashed potatoes, gravy, vegetable, salad and roll. Cost is a $6 donation. For takeouts or more information, call 586-2197. Public welcome. Sunday bingo at 6 p.m., kitchen opens one hour prior.

Challenge to benefit

Benson Area Food Bank

Benson Area Food Bank is the beneficiary of a sponsor from the community who will match, dollar for dollar, donations from the public as a challenge to help defray the increasing cost of feeding the needy.

This sponsor will contribute up to $3,000 towards this effort. The food bank has seen an increase of almost 300 percent in the number of households served during the last year and it is anticipated that this number will go up in the coming year. Donations for this "Community Challenge" will be accepted in any amount at the Benson Area Food Bank, 370 S. Huachuca St. in Benson.

If donating by check, include "Community challenge" in the memo part of the check. The challenge runs to Dec. 31.

Elks dinners feature

wintertime favorites

For the winter months, the menu for the Elks Tuesday dinners will include wintertime, fireside, warming favorites like chili and cornbread, homemade soups and salads and stews. These dinners include soft drink, iced tea or coffee. The $6 donation also includes dessert.

Dinners are held each Tuesday from 4:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. at the at the Elks/Masonic Lodge, 623 Foothill Dr. in Benson.

Parkinson's disease

support group meetings

A monthly Parkinson's disease support group meeting is held every fourth Wednesday at 2 p.m. in the St. Timothy Recreation Building at Holy Trinity Monastery in St. David.

be shown at senior center

A movie titled "For my Father," will be shown Thursday, (Dec. 17) at 3 p.m. at the Benson Senior/Community Center. Call 720-6044 for information.

Photographers' work on display at City Hall Gallery

The work of photographers Ingrid Curry, Darlene Rodriguez, Becky Fortenberry and Winona Sharp, is being shown in City Hall Gallery for a show entitled "The Doors of Cochise County."

Also in the news is that the City of Benson has purchased a permanent hanging system for the City Hall Gallery in anticipation of other unique art shows coming to the area this year. Benson Park & Swap food drive scheduled Saturday

The Benson Park & Swap-Meet is holding a food drive at Saturday's event. Vendors and members of the public are asked to donate non-perishable food items. The Community Food Pantry is joining forces with event organizers for the Dec. 19 event. Theme for the event is Christmas. Santa will be there and there will be free sodas and candy canes. The swap meet will be held at 2010 W. 4th St. [Reb's Cafe lot]

Fraternal Order of Eagles activities scheduled

There's plenty happening at the Fraternal Order of Eagles No. 3593 Aerie, 750 E. 4th St.

Monday and Thursday, slingo at 4:30 p.m.; Wednesday bingo, card sales begin at 5:30 p.m., kitchen opens at 5 p.m.; Sunday NFL, noon. The social room is open at 2 p.m. Monday through Thursday and at noon on Friday, Saturday and Sunday.

Beginners knitting

class to begin in January

The Benson Museum's Art and Quilt Gallery will be holding knitting classes for beginners starting in January. Anyone interested can contact the quilt gallery at 586-9313 or stop in to sign up. The class will be taught by Charlotte Sveilis.

The gallery is open Tuesday through Friday, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., and 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Saturday.

Additionally, the Mother Earth Knitters will meet the third Thursday of each month. Refreshments served. Contact the gallery for times.

Modern western square dancing will be held every Tuesday from 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. at the Benson Senior/Community Center, 705 W. Union St. Call 720-6044 for details.

Heart screenings Dec. 18 at Our Lady of Lourdes

Cathedral Health Services will be at Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church, 386 E. 5th St., in Benson Friday, Dec. 18, offering cardiovascular disease screenings. Individual screening tests will be offered.

'tea parties on the corner'

The public is invited to tea parties on the corner each Friday from noon to 2 p.m. at Prickly Pear and 4th streets. Participants are invited to wear patriotic colors or display flags.

A women's interdenominational Bible study will meet Wednesday mornings from 9 a.m. to 11:15 a.m., at First Baptist Church, 983 S. Ocotillo Ave. Study is on the book of Daniel with Beth Moore. Benson Lions Club all-you-can-eat pancake, eggs, bacon, coffee, tea and juice breakfast, from 7:30 a.m. to 11 a.m. at the club, 599 S. Dragoon St., Sunday, Dec. 20.

Lions bingo every friday night. Kitchen opens at 4:30 p.m. to 6:15 p.m. Early bird games begin at 6:30 p.m.

GED test dates at Cochise College SV posted

Cochise College will administer the General Educational Development (GED) exam on on a trial basis in the new year. The pilot program begins with a test date of Saturday, Jan. 16, and registration is now being accepted. Test will be given on Saturday, Jan. 16 from 7:45 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the testing office at the Sierra Vista Campus.

GED candidates can register to take the exam at the testing office from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. Monday through Thursday through Thursday, Dec. 17. The college will be closed for the holidays Dec. 19 through Jan. 3. Registration also will take place from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. Monday, Jan. 4 through Thursday, Jan. 7 and from 8 a.m. to noon on Saturday, Jan. 9. Registration must be done in person. Candidates will spend approximately 90 minutes filling out paperwork and taking a math practice test. A $65 GED exam fee must be paid at that time. Two forms of identification are required. The Disabled American Veterans service officer will be available at the Fraternal Order of Eagles, 750 E. 4th St., in Benson every Wednesday, 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. , and at the City of Benson's [train depot] Visitor's Center on 4th St., on Fridays from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.
