Junior April Estrella is San Pedro Valley High School's January Student of the Month.
Estrella has been a student at SPVHS for over two years. She transferred from Benson High School in the middle of her freshman year after struggling to find success in her transition from middle school, said school Principal Angela Grizzle.
"This is the first time April has received this honor," said Grizzle. "Besides having nearly perfect attendance and no disciplinary issues, April has demonstrated great improvement in work ethic and maturity over the past few months. Most recently she seems to be more focused on her schooling than ever before.
"The staff is seeing a great ability in April to work independently and with solid self-discipline. These skills and this maturity will benefit April as she transitions into the adult world of work and post-secondary schooling and training," said Grizzle.
Estrella is on track to graduate a year early, and will receive her diploma in May.
"To ensure April is ready for college, she'll need to place into college-level English and math courses at Cochise College as part of her requirements to graduate a year early.
This SPVHS policy ensures all our early graduates are college-ready, said Grizzle.
As Student of the Month, Estrella will be recognized at the SPVHS graduation ceremony in May with a plaque.
In addition, her name will remain on the 2009-2010 Student of the Month perpetual plaque that hangs in the school's front office.
