Dr. Mavie Elizabeth Armstrong, 25-year resident of Benson, Ariz., died in Tucson on Jan. 22, 2010. Mavie taught at the Benson Primary School, kindergarten through grade four, until her retirement 10 years ago.

Mavie was born in Cambridge, Mass. on Nov. 26, 1942. She moved to Benson in 1971, following a career as a legal secretary for the Superior Court in Bisbee, Ariz., where she lived from 1960 until 1971. Mavie received a Bachelor of Arts, Master's Degree and Ed. D. in Education from the University of Arizona and also taught part time for Cochise Junior College prior to her retirement in Rio Rico and Green Valley.

Mavie is survived by her brother, John Armstrong, of Colorado Springs, Colo., his wife, Cassie; her nieces Adrienne and Nicole and great-nephew, Patrick Miner; as well as her cousin, Olga Petraitis, of Green Valley.

During her long teaching career, Mavie believed in and taught every student to his or her highest potential. Not only a classroom teacher, Mavie was a teacher leader in the educational community and mentored many young teachers. She admired teachers who sought excellence in their profession and respected those who fostered active learning environments for their students.

Mavie's many interests included world travel, gardening, a love of feline friends and her talent for watercolor. She will be greatly missed by all her friends in southern Arizona.

Following a private internment, a memorial service was held at the East Social Center in Green Valley on Jan. 30.
