After two dominating 2A East Conference victories last week, the Benson Bobcats got a taste of what post-season play will be like, hosting the 22-4 San Carlos Braves on Saturday.
San Carlos has become a target for Benson after the Braves eliminated them in the state tournament last season.
On Saturday, the Bobcats' continued to struggle with closing out games. After leading in the first half, the Bobcats allowed another comeback victory, as the Braves won 59-54.
In the first quarter, the Bobcats jumped out to an 18-8 lead, but the Braves came together in the second, to outscore Benson 19-11, but still trailed 29-27 at halftime.
Despite a strong fourth quarter effort, the Bobcats allowed the Braves to dominate the third quarter where they were outscored 20-9.
Tyler Deneweth and Dain Dastrup led the Bobcats with 13 points each, while Alex Montijo finished with 11 and Kjel Gudvangen had a double-double with 10 points and 10 rebounds.
"I thought we played poised and composed and we battled back when they stretched it out on us in the third," said Coach Chris Riehemann. "It was a great January high school basketball game that I think will prepare our guys for a tough stretch run going into the state tournament."
Earlier in the week, the Bobcats wrapped up two badly needed conference victories, beating Tombstone 61-32, and then, Morenci on Friday, 59-41.
Against Tombstone, Deneweth led the Bobcats' scoring with 19 points, while Dastrup finished with 16.
After committing 16 turnovers in the first half against Morenci on Friday, the Bobcats trailed 26-23, but with better ball control in the second half, outscored the Wildcats 36-15 for the victory.
Now, every game counts for the Bobcats as the battle for a conference title is now between them, Thatcher and Willcox. Benson is currently in third place at 6-2, while Willcox is 7-2 and Thatcher leads with an 8-1 record.
Benson seniors have said throughout their high school careers they have been unable to defeat Thatcher, and after a fourth-quarter let down earlier this season, are still 0-10.
This week, the Bobcats will have a chance at the conference leaders at home. They hosted the Eagles on Tuesday night. Results for the contest were not available at press time.
On Friday, the Bobcats will host a rematch against Morenci, and next week, will get a shot at the second-place Cowboys in Willcox.
