After Tombstone's tower, Ajah Edwards, fouled out in the fourth quarter, the Lady Bobcats were able to bring home a badly needed 2A East Conference victory last Tuesday.

In the close game, the Bobcats managed the game well, and after some tough games recently, settled some ball control issues that have plagued them all season.

In the first quarter, after trailing 10-7 with seconds left, Stephanie Ramirez nailed the outside shot to tie the game. Ramirez finished the game with 10 points.

In the second quarter, the Lady Bobcats started taking control with Ramirez and Cheyanne Keith lighting up the boards.

Just before halftime, the Bobcats suffered a blow when Keith tweaked her ankle after sinking a three-point shot, which gave the Bobcats a 23-17 halftime lead.

In the third, the game was tight with the Bobcats holding a 36-29 edge going into the final eight minutes.

In the final quarter, Tombstone unveiled their secret weapon, leaving the six-foot Edwards under the basket and forcing some turnovers to get her the ball.

After sinking four straight shots, Tombstone took a 39-38 lead with 4:58 left. After forcing a turnover, Davena Brown hit a layup to extend the Tombstone lead to 41-38 with 4:48 left.

Stephanie Ramirez dribbled down court and fired off a three to get the Bobcats back on track and tie the game at 41 with 4:15 ticking down.

For half of the fourth quarter, the Bobcats' height disadvantage was a problem, as they had no answer for Edwards.

The game could have gone from bad to worse, but back-to-back fouls forced Edwards out of the game with 4:08 left.

Stacey Ramirez hit one of two free throws to give the Bobcats a one-point lead with 4:05 left, and then hit on the offensive-rebound to take a 44-41 lead.

Stacey Ramirez had a game-leading 13 points in the game.

Leading 46-43, Brown hit for Tombstone with just over a minute to play, and Benson's Kayla Haro was called for a foul that allowed Cheyene Soto to tie the game at 46 with 29 seconds left.

In a scramble for the inbound pass, Soto was called for a foul, sending Beca Ames to the foul line to attempt two shots with 11 seconds left.

Ames made one shot to again give Benson a one-point lead.

Tombstone had their shot, with Brown getting the ball into shooting range, but Haro got the steal and ran out the final seconds and give the Bobcats a hard-fought victory.

Haro had 11 points in the game.

"This was an excellent team win for us," said Coach Kimberly East. "At this time of year, every win matters. I am very proud of these girls. They continue to work hard and play hard. It will pay off."

The Lady Bobcats improved to 2-4 in conference play and were able to secure another win Friday night over Morenci.

The Lady Bobcats fired shots off quickly, taking a 15-9 first-quarter lead, and by halftime, maintained a 27-21 advantage.

A bad third quarter allowed the Wildcats to get back into the game, as they outscored Benson 6-3, but the Bobcats held on to win 42-36.

Ari Andrade and Stacey Ramirez led the Bobcats in scoring with 10 points each. Stephanie Ramirez had 7 points, and Haro finished with 8.

Andrade also led the team with 9 rebounds while Ames had 8.

"This was another excellent team win for us," East said. "Traveling to Morenci is never an easy game. We did much better with our ball control, and thus, we got our shots that we wanted. We need to improve our shooting percentage, but I am happy with the effort and proud of these girls. Game by game, we are making progress."

The Bobcats are currently 3-4 in conference play, with games against Thatcher and a rematch against Morenci at home on Friday.

In non-conference play last week, the Lady Bobcats got a taste of what the postseason might be like, as they hosted San Carlos, a top five team in the state.

They struggled, losing 70-50. East said San Carlos made 52 percent of their shots, while the Bobcats made only 27 percent.

In all, East said the Bobcats played a good game against a tough team.

Stacey Ramirez heated up the boards, leading the Bobcats' efforts with 17 points; Stephanie Ramirez finished with 12 points and Haro had 10.

Kimberly Brogain finished with 9 rebounds, while Cheyanne Blaschke had 7.
