The St. David Lady Tigers' hoops team posted a 3-0 record over the past week, bringing its overall record 12-9, 8-3 in league play, recording wins over Tanque Verde, St. Gregory and Academy of Tucson.

Amorette Jacquez scored 13 points and Kayla Carpenter added 11 in a 56-24 victory over Tanque Verde on Tuesday, Jan. 26.

"Our press was really good, and once we got the turnover, our girls moved the ball really well (only nine turnovers for the game), found open shooters all over the floor and just looked really, really good. Outside of our scoring in the last quarter I can't find much to not be happy about," said Coach Ira Lewis.

Lewis was referring to the fourth quarter in which St. David managed a four-point output.

The Lady Tigers held a convincing 22-4 lead at the end of the first quarter, and increased that to 31-12 at the half.

In addition to the 13-point effort, Jacquez recorded nine rebounds to go with three steals and an assist. Carpenter wiped the glass clean with 15 rebounds, a steal and an assist. Marissa Garcia followed with 8 points while dishing out four assists with three steals, while Marissa Webb added 7 points with three rebounds, a pair of assists and a steal.

The inside game was especially strong with the Tigers' three post players combined to score 30 points, grab 26 rebounds, and add four steals and three assists.

"When our posts play this well we are a hard team to beat," said Lewis. "The guards did a fine job of finding them open and getting them the ball."

On Thursday, Jan. 28, the Lady Tigers bested host St. Gregory 51-41 in a closely contested game between the rival programs. Jacquez led St. David with an 18-point effort and Garcia added 11 points.

"Kayla [Carpenter] got in foul trouble early and didn't see the court for most of the first half," said Lewis. "Luckily we didn't need her that much and their posts both got into major foul trouble with three and four fouls each before the half was over."

Thursday's contest was a rematch from two weeks ago.

After each team played to 12-all tie in the first quarter, St. David outscored St. Gregory 15-4 in the second quarter behind a stingy defense and a late surge that saw the Tigers hit key free throws for a 27-16 at the half.

St. Gregory came out strong in the third quarter with a 12-point output while limiting St. David to five points to cutting the Tigers' lead 32-28 to set the stage for an action-packed final quarter.

In the fourth quarter the Hawks kept the game close but were never able to push ahead of the Tigers. Late in the game the Tigers used a full-court press to rattle the Hawks and Garcia finally put the game away late with a steal and some free throws on the same play that sent one of the Hawks' best players to the bench with five fouls.

"Marissa came up big for us," said Lewis. "We kept asking for one more stop on defense and then she goes out and makes that steal to secure the victory. I told the girls after the game that defense and free throw shooting win games and they did both really well tonight."

On Friday, Carpenter scored 21 points and Jacquez added 12 to lead host St. David to a 57-22 win over Academy of Tucson.

"I asked the girls to give me four consistent quarters. We tried a lot of different defenses and offenses, played all of our girls, and finished the week with a perfect record. As a coach you can't ask for more then that," said Lewis.

The Tigers led 16-6 at the end of the first quarter and 28-8 at the half.

St. David traveled to Tanque Verde on Tuesday. The game was held after the News-Sun's press time. The Lady Tigers will host Green Fields on Friday on senior night and their final home game of the regular season. Winner of that game will get the No. 3 seed for the state tournament playoffs in two weeks.
