A woman recently indicted on an allegation of providing confidential information about drug-related arrests and investigations to a drug trafficking organization while employed by the Cochise County Attorney's Office, pleaded not guilty during an arraignment Monday.
Angelica Maria Borquez and co-defendant Ignacio Alfredo Erives-Martinez are charged with 13 felony counts in an indictment that was filed on Thursday in Cochise County Superior Court.
The charges include conspiracy, fraudulent schemes and artifices, participating in a criminal syndicate and 10 counts of unlawful use of a wire communication to facilitate a felony from Nov. 5, 2008, to January of this year.
According to the indictment, Borquez was working as a secretary with the drug unit in the County Attorney's Office and Erives-Martinez was associated with the drug trafficking organization.
The conspiracy count alleges the defendants and unknown people agreed with each other to commit the crimes of fraudulent schemes and artifices, participating in a criminal syndicate, assisting a criminal syndicate and transportation of marijuana for sale.
The charge of fraudulent schemes and artifices states Borquez and Erives-Martinez obtained the benefit of money in a scheme to deprive the County Attorney's Office of the intangible right to honest services.
The count of participation in a criminal syndicate claims they intentionally promoted or furthered the criminal objectives of the syndicate by inducing or committing any act or omission by a public servant in violation of her official duty.
All 10 charges of unlawful use of a wire communication to facilitate a felony cite specific dates and times in November and December 2008 when Borquez and/or Erives-Martinez allegedly committed these offenses.
This case is being prosecuted by the Attorney General's Office. Borquez is being held in the Cochise County Jail.
