The Benson girls are struggling to finish in the top 24 of the 2A class, losing two of three conference games last week. The Bobcats lone win came against Morenci at home on Thursday, while they suffered losses against Thatcher and Willcox.
The week started last Tuesday against Thatcher.
After leading 12-7 in the first quarter, Thatcher's defense pulled together in the second quarter to hold Benson to three points.
After Thatcher put up 14 points in the second quarter, they led at halftime 21-15, and dominated the second half, to hand the Lady Bobcats a 57-35 loss.
"I am very proud with our effort tonight; we really have been working on rebounding, and it paid off," said Coach Kimberly East. "Thatcher did not dominate the boards like they did in Thatcher. We need to shoot better when we have open opportunities."
In the loss, Stephanie Ramirez led the Bobcats with 12 points, while Kayla Haro had 7 and Cheyanne Blaschke and Beca Ames both scored 6.
On Thursday, the Bobcats dominated Morenci, winning 56-38, as Ramirez had another game-leading performance with 17 points and three steals. Haro had 15 points and Ari Andrade scored 9.
"We struggled with our scoring in the first half, so we stepped up our defense in the second half and it really opened up many more scoring possibilities," East said.
The Bobcats were trailing 17-15 at halftime but outscored Morenci 18-15 in the third quarter, and dominated the fourth with 23 points.
The Lady Bobcats shot an all-time high of 92 shots.
"I love that this team keeps pushing their opponents," East said. "I feel we will finish strong and get a decent spot in the state tourney. These girls continue to work hard and deserve a chance at their postseason goals."
On Monday, however, their efforts were stalled by a tough Willcox team that had beaten them by one point earlier this season.
After trailing 17-13 in the first quarter, the Lady Bobcats worked to keep the game close in the second.
With just over 90 seconds left in the half, Stacey Ramirez sank a three-pointer to cut the Willcox lead to 3, and capitalizing on two turnovers, Cheyanne Keith tied the game at 30 with 29 seconds left.
After hitting a shot from underneath, Shelby Harguess gave Willcox a 32-30 lead at halftime.
In the second half, Willcox gained some leverage and held the lead for the rest of the game to win 57-37.
The Bobcats are now 4-6 in the 2A East Conference with two must-win games against Bisbee and Pima this week.
