Daycare center closed

After losing track of a 5-year-old girl who walked nearly a mile before being recovered by Benson Police, the Tree House Daycare Center closed its doors last week.

After 14 years, the daycare center reportedly called parents Wednesday afternoon to let them know they would be closing for good on Thursday morning. The phone lines to the 5th Street business were also disconnected on Thursday.

The center closed its doors after five-year-old Jessica Jones left the facility through a front gate Feb. 3, and before being found, she had walked nearly a mile without shoes or a jacket in the rain.

Jessica was found along State Route 80 when an out-of-state couple pulled over and notified police, who then picked her up and took her to her mother.

Jessica's father Chad Jones was extremely upset about the incident, saying his daughter could have been seriously injured or even taken.

Tina Jones, Jessica's mother, said she received a call from the daycare center around 2:15 p.m. on Wednesday that they would no longer be providing childcare services in Benson.

Jones took her daughter, along with three other children back to the facility after the Feb. 3 incident. She said the problem in Benson is childcare services are lacking.

Jones said she had to work from home on Thursday, but found someone who would watch her children during the week starting Friday.

"It is unfortunate that this has happened to all the parents," she said. "The daycare center maybe should have stayed open, and just added more people to watch the kids, and should have gotten more help from the community. They are the only daycare center in town."

Tree Jones, owner of the daycare center, could not be reached for a comment last week, but on Feb. 8 said the incident was unfortunate, and they had taken steps to make sure no other children got out of the gates.

She said Jessica had told the teacher on duty she was going to the bathroom around naptime, and slipped out at some point.

The 14-year owner said they had purchased sensors and gave Jessica's parents the option to have the teacher on duty at the time fired.

Chad Jones said Jessica did not go unpunished in the situation, and she has been talked to about the dangers of wandering off. But, at the same time, he said the daycare center was being paid to keep his daughter safe.

" Although it was a horrific set of circumstances that led to this closing, it should not have precipitated the closing of the day care center. It was a very important asset to the community as every working parent knows. Corrective action could have been and should have been taken way before any thought of the center closing. If the center had a history of neglect or abuse, then that would have justified closing. Perhaps the owner was shocked so bad by the incident they felt it had to close. "

" Although the situation had the BEST possible outcome from a worst case situation, now suddenly people remember that for 13 years this facility served the community. I read the other blog and it is a shame that because of those "heat of the moment" comments Benson has lost its ONLY childcare facility. Maybe reporting the single view of this agency was also damaging, because not once did this reporter bother to mention, as another commenter did, that there was no history of abuse or neglect or even failure to provide a safe environment. But also people tend to forget that and also that sometimes, even in the best of surroundings and supervison, children do the darndest things. Do you think a private caretaker is going to purchase the same scensors and equipment that this facility had? Now parents have to deal with the random card of you really dont know what is happening to your child when you leave them with the babysitter. Who is coming into contact with your child while they are at someone elses home? Is the babysitter an unregistered sex offender or child abuser, cause you know they will tell you these things, when you ask them politely. At least with a registered facility there were measures taken to insure your child was being watched by state verified people with none of these kinds of histories. People mandated to be trained in children's CPR and First Aid. So, should the Tree-House Day care have been punished, YES but at the same time, there was room here to give them more community support in improving themselves and making sure this didnt happen again; versus the public crucifixion and damnation that the original article and its commentary gave them. The lesson Benson, next time you call for other's blood make sure you aren't swinging a double edged sword! "

" well I have only lived in this area for 3 yrs but I heard plenty off stuff that went on up there, like the staff and adult ratio was not follwed and leaving highschool kids watch the kids so it dooesn't surprise me non I walked in to the daycare when I first moved to town and was there w/ my 6 month old son for 20 min before any staff notice me and asked if I was dropping him off for the day and I was like nice, no way I saw 3 things going on that would have shut any other place down in a heart beat.. " My child went to the daycare for 6 months, and lots of things went on that were wrong. BUT. as a single parent new to the area, i was very limited on options for daycare. once i found a sitter he was ripped out of there." sad..." stated the fears of a chid going to a babysitter not knowing who the people really were. well at the daycare, did any of you know that none of the employees were finger printed? no background checks were done? i noticed on their bulliten board that 2 or 3 of the employees were food handler licensed, but i saw at least 4 to 5 of the employees preparing food for snacks or meals. my point is, just because you call yourself a daycare doesnt mean they are acting professionally. I witnessed workers on computer instead of watching kids, using cell phones, and mp3's.......make work enviroment fun, but not at the price of a childs safety. "

" I would love to open a daycare center in this area specialy now when there is a need but I have the schooling and ability to do it and I have a great place for kids to grow and learn but no funding it would cost so much to buy a place and get ne started just sad to see the need but can't do nothing about it and I would make sure that I hired well qualified staff.
