In the past few weeks, several hundred people have gathered at the Douglas and Sierra Vista campuses to publicly celebrate the opening of our new and renovated facilities. Guests toured our student-friendly spaces, mingled with faculty and staff, and sampled recipes created by our culinary arts students.

They also took part in academic demonstrations, which gave them a chance to see how capital improvements impact the student experience. The Nursing Department showed off its new simulation lab, which helps ease our demands on clinical facilities in the community. The Math and Science Department invited visitors into a new science lab to see a high school Running Start class in action. In the Career Technical Education Building, the public got a taste of what our new mechatronics program will entail when it starts in March. Technology departments took guests through new welding and agriculture labs and demonstrated how computer games are designed and created. Art faculty and ceramics students demonstrated how pots are thrown, and we also opened the Learning Commons Complex so guests could see how computer labs and tutoring services are accessed and utilized.

The student experience is something we have been monitoring at Cochise College. It's not unusual for students to arrive at Cochise not knowing what to expect. Despite some challenges our previous facilities presented, students usually have discovered during the course of their college experience the magic a good faculty member can make in the classroom. In other words, once they get a foot in the door, they realize what a terrific opportunity is available to them.

This isn't bad, but it would be easier to recruit new students if they perceive that their experience will be first rate. Our renewed learning environment will help make an excellent experience the expectation, rather than the unanticipated benefit, of attending Cochise College. Our modified facilities add credibility to our image by improving access with the consolidated location of key service areas; making the college a friendly destination and a place where students have dedicated spaces for study or social activities; and, of course, enhancing visual appeal for all of our visitors.

If you were among the guests at one of our open houses, you may have noticed some things missing. The details are really coming together, but we need to add the finishing touches, such as landscaping and signage, which will only serve to improve the appeal of Cochise College to the students and potential students for whom the enhancements were made.

I would like to again publicly comend the members of the Governing Board and the past and present college administration and employees whose vision and dedication brought us to this point. With our terrific faculty and "can-do" staff and the image our upgraded environment portrays, we have a lot to work with here at Cochise College.

If you were not among the guests at our open house events, I invite you to stroll our campuses when you have time, or to call and make an appointment with someone to show you around. We do enjoy sharing the college with you - our community.
