After a successful regular season, the Benson boys' basketball team has received several recognitions in the 2A East Conference with Coach Chris Riehemann being named Coach of the Year, and senior Tyler Deneweth sharing Player of the Year honors.
Prior to the first season tipoff, Riehemann said Deneweth had the talent and ability to win the conference's top award. Deneweth proved the coach right, sharing Player of the Year honors with Dillon Goodman of Pima.
"It's a great reward for someone who has worked as hard as Tyler has," said Riehemann. "When somebody puts the effort into it like Tyler has for four years, it's nice to see him recognized outside of our program for his accomplishments."
Deneweth averaged 18.9 points a game in the 2009-2010 season, with a season-high 35 points against Bisbee.
The senior led the Bobcats to a 19-10 record, and the third round of the state playoffs, where they fell to the eventual 2A state champion Scottsdale Christian.
Deneweth also received All-Conference honors, being selected first team, along with senior teammate Dain Dastrup.
After coming into the season late, senior Kyle Graf was named second-team All-Conference.
Riehemann, in his fourth year as Benson's head coach, was named the 2A East Conference Coach of the Year.
Riehemann came into a young program that he has worked to rebuild during the last four years.
In his first season, the Bobcats finished 7-20 and have improved each year. In 2007-08, the Bobcats were 18-11, and over the last two seasons they have finished 19-10, becoming co-champions of the conference this year.
After coaching in middle school for several years, Riehemann took the place of Rusty Taylor, who left the district.
While the program is still young, Riehemann is working to create more interest in the sport through summer programs for athletes of all ages.
Athletic Director James Driggers said the basketball coach has done an "excellent" job with the program.
"He's done a great job working with those kids," Driggers said. "I've been here 38 years and never seen a defense play as well as I saw this year. His work with the defense was great."
Throughout the last few seasons, Riehemann has stressed the need for tough defense to win games.
At the end of the 2009-2010 season, the Bobcats put the defensive strategy to work, winning five in a row, three of those by at least 20 points.
