After finishing in fourth place for the last two seasons, the St. David softball team has its sights set on a first-place finish, and with plenty of returning stars, they believe they can do it.
"We are a much deeper team this year than what we have been in the last three seasons," said Coach Ira Lewis. "For the first time in a long time, there is competition at multiple positions that will only make us tougher. It also provides us with some flexibility in the lineup and on the bench in tight games."
Last year, the Lady Tigers were 14-10 overall, and by losing only two players off the roster, Lewis said they are ready for action.
Some of the teams' promising newcomers include Sheradee Lee, who played briefly in her freshman season, and is back this year to give the team some depth across the outfield and infield.
Lewis said Abby Genthe is also a nice addition to the team, and a "very pleasant surprise in the outfield."
As the Tigers aim to take first in the 1A South, and focus on a run at the state title, Lewis said some coaching additions have also helped.
Leah Haymore joined the coaching staff, and has brought "intensity to the team and staff that has been lacking," Lewis said.
"She is a skilled coach who pushes each girl to get better," Lewis added. "She was on the only St. David softball team to get to the state championship game and sees this team as a very formidable team."
Dona Lee is also new to the coaching staff, along with Jimmy Garcia, who is returning for a second season.
Lewis said Garcia has good insight and attention to the detail and the flow of the game.
"With our four sets of eyes, and on occasion five, we are able to work with girls in much smaller groups, which allows us to coach more and prepare the girls better," Lewis said.
The Lady Tigers opened the season at home against Tombstone on Tuesday. Results of the contest were not available at press time.
They will travel to Valley Union Friday to compete in the annual tournament.
On Feb. 9 the Tigers will return home for a contest against St. Augustine, a tough conference opponent. Games begin at 4 p.m.
