With the entire girls' team returning to the court after off-season work, the Benson Bobcats' tennis team ought to be competitive in the new season.

While the girls' team is intact, one big change to this season's tennis program is new Coach Brian Bokowski, who is taking the place of former Coach Kimberly East.

While both the boys' and girls' teams finished in last place last season, Bokowski said the athletes are working hard to improve and want to move up from winning individual matches to winning matches as a team.

"I believe that we have improved a lot up at the net compared to last year," Bokowski said. "Last year, we were pretty clueless in attacking situations at the net, but we have come a long way in that regard."

Seniors Emilee Douglas and Sylvalyn Simpson will lead the girls' team.

One of the players to watch for in the new season will be junior Courtney Merrill, who Bokowski said put in a lot of work during the off-season.

On the boys' team, Bokowski said the Bobcats lost Nathan East from last year's team, but senior returners Michael Vivian, Cameron Reece and Michael Savage should make a big impact in the new season.

Some promising newcomers this season include Katya Pelpalina, Kaysie Gauvin, Jann Sternberg and Jordan Douglas.

As the season progresses, Bokowski said the Bobcats will continue to work on footwork and team quickness.

To work on these two areas, Bokowski said the team would be getting assistance from Gary Douglas, who is hosting "Camp Douglas" to improve athletic ability.

The Bobcats opened the season against inner-valley rival St. David Tuesday. Results for the contest were not available at press time.

The Bobcats will travel to Thatcher on Friday. They will host their first home meet of the season Tuesday, Feb. 9, starting at 3 p.m.
