Stop results in drug, gun possession charges

A $500,000 bond was set for Benson resident Paul Knight Friday after police found drugs and weapons in his car during a routine traffic stop.
Authorities said Knight, 33, was stopped Wednesday night for a cracked windshield and a non-operating brake light on County Road in Benson.
After refusing to submit to a search of the vehicle where four rifles were in clear view, Border Patrol was called in to have the drug dog do an air-sniff test.
The K-9 alerted on the vehicle, and a search was authorized.
During the search, Benson police found an unspecified amount of methamphetamine, pipes, scales and other drug paraphernalia.
A criminal history check revealed Knight was convicted of domestic violence, and admitted at the scen he was on probation.
After being advised of his rights, Knight admitted to the possession of meth with the intent to sell, authorities said.
Knight has been charged with possession of a dangerous drug, possession of dangerous drugs for sale, transportation of dangerous drugs for sale, eight counts of misconduct involving a weapon and four counts of possession of drug paraphernalia.
A preliminary hearing is scheduled for March 15 at Judge Joe Knoblock's court in Benson.
In a separate case this weekend, Knoblock set a $250,000 bond for two Benson residents allegedly involved in a conspiracy that resulted in the sale of drugs.
Scott Matthews, 31, and Natalie Theresa Bugh, 39, have been charged with a felony count of conspiracy, possession of dangerous drugs for sale, transportation of dangerous drugs for sale and false reporting to law enforcement.
Authorities said Benson Police Detective Brian Williams obtained a search warrant Saturday for the cell phone owned by Jesse Knight.
A search of the phone revealed text messages from Knight to Matthews to assist in the sale of meth.
Bugh allegedly called in a false report to police about a fight at Wal-Mart to divert law enforcement to make sure they would not intercept the drugs held by Knight and Matthews.
A preliminary hearing for Matthews is slated for March 16, while Bugh will go before the court on March 17.
