Bobcats look to improve in 2010

Staff Report

Strength pitching and at bat in the 2010 season should help the Benson High School baseball team improve on last year's record.

The Bobcats have started the season out 2-2, beating Valley Union in the home opener last Tuesday, and defeating Pima 20-3. Stats for the games, which were part of the annual Safford Baseball Tournament, were not provided.

Leading this season's squad are seniors Carlos Ravago and Kyle Graf. Ravago will play outfield and pitch, while Graf primarily serves in the infield.

Juniors returning this season are utility player Alex Montijo, William Walton, Grant McCune, Zach Atkins, Daniel Naegle and Daniel Olivas.

Sophomores are Ryan Meza, who led the Bobcats' pitchers last Tuesday, Brian Tibbitts and Rayvean Moore, who played first base in the opener.

"I feel our pitching and bats will be our strong points this year," said Coach Ernie Meza. "I also think our defense should be pretty solid, having only lost two seniors last year. Our younger players have a significant amount of experience at the varsity level, which is going to help us out tremendously."

Meza said the team's weakness is the Bobcats' mental approach to the game.

"We need to do a better job at mentally preparing ourselves for games as well as practice. Having an approach and a purpose to everything that we are trying to accomplish."

This week the Bobcats will be competing in the Bisbee baseball tournament, and on Tuesday they will travel to Tombstone to start 2A East Conference play.
