Mescal Fire Chief cited on domestic violence charge

Mescal/J-Six Fire District Chief Warren Neff has been cited on a charge of domestic violence after an apparent altercation with his wife, in which she claims to have been threatened at gunpoint.

Deputies responded to the couple's home in the 1000 block of N. Tequila Trail Tuesday, March 9 at about 11:41 p.m., according to a Cochise County Sheriff's Office news release. The release states "the wife [Terri Jo Neff] sustained bruising to her right knee and complained of pain to the back side of her right knee," a result of her falling after allegedly being shoved, prompting the victim to file an order of protection.

However her statement in the order of protection form describes more than just a shoving match.

"I was threatened at gunpoint, told that if I tried to leave the house I'd be shot." She goes on to say she was "physically assaulted by grabbing my neck and also pushing me to the ground. I was taken to the Benson Hospital by (the sheriff's office). X-rays - diagnosed with a sprained knee. I am fearful that Warren will follow through on his threats to shoot me. I also need to get my car and belongings from his house," she stated.

Terri Jo is the current chairman of the Mescal/J-Six Fire District Board, and is facing embezzlement charges for allegedly stealing $49,480 of dollars from former employer Mescal Auto. Her trial is set for April in Cochise County Superior Court in Bisbee.

Terri Jo is the former executive director of the Benson/San Pedro Valley Chamber of Commerce. She also had submitted stories as a free-lancer published in the News-Sun.

In 2008, the Cochise County Board of Supervisors approved creation of the Mescal/J-Six Fire District where Terri Jo serves on the board.

As a district, property owners are now responsible for paying for fire and emergency medical assistance. All residents pay by having a portion of their property taxes taken out to fund the district needs.

" Pretty sure Warren Neff isn't the chief of Mescal fire anymore. He resigned a few months ago. Might want to check your facts before you publish your story... Oops, too late. "

" Once again the News is incorrect. Mr. Neff resigned as the Fire Chief last November to pursue other interests. "

" But didn't Warren Neff resign as fire chief? (I know it has nothing to do with the story really--but hey, let's get our facts straight.) "

" Just resign already Terri Jo! You are an embarassment and a detriment to the Mescal Fire District. Have some class and let this community heal from the damage you have caused. "

" If Thelma Grimes would have done her homework, maybe some investigating, she would have known that Warren Neff hasn't been the fire chief of the Mescal-J6 Fire District since November 30th of last year. What happend to old fashion investigating prior to printing a story? Warren Neff is no longer associated in anyway with the Mescal-J6 Fire District..... "

Resignation due wrote on Mar 17, 2010 10:55 PM:

" This is just really sad.

These two characters are self-destructing and I just wish they would go away.

Their dramas and actions are out of control . They need to look in the mirror and decide if this is the best they can do with their lives.

Neither one of these (alleged)scoundrels should ever be in elected public office. A resignation and apology is in order.

Mescal taxpayers need to demand Terri Jo resign. She can't run her personal life and she shouldn't be running a fire district. "

" Really? More drama? Alleged embezzler, and now an alleged wife beater? Don't drink the water at the Neff's house. Any chance they could just go back to where they came from, and leave us alone? "

" This is ridiculous! Obviously Thelma hasn’t done her homework because Warren Neff is no longer the Mescal Fire Chief. It is horrible that anything that happens in Terri Jo Neff’s personal life is always linked to the J-6/Mescal Fire Department. This makes our community even less supportive. These men and women are voluntarily risking their lives to help and protect this community! I just don’t understand it. People don’t want to support this department but if their house was on fire or they were in a car accident where is the first place they turn? I just wish people would be a little more supportive for a fire department that protects and saves peoples lives! "

" Another shining example of quality SPVNS reporting! If the headline is completely inaccurate (and it is), perhaps the "facts" in the article are equally inaccurate -- just as everything Ms. Grimes has reported on Ms. Neff's legal difficulties has been distorted. Could this have anything to do with "professional jealousy" since Ms. Neff was also a reporter? "

DART wrote on Mar 30, 2010 4:38 PM:

" I don't know either of these people, but I know how this women feels.I think something is very wrong with Mescal. I had a family member who lived there and she was killed her husband. He shot her in the head because she was trying to leave him. Domestic violence is something everyone should be concerned about. This article should have been about the domestic violence issue and not what she did or what he was at the fire dept. "
