The Bobcat golf team is well into their spring season with two matches already in the books. And with 17 athletes competing for the Bobcats - seven freshmen, one sophomore, six juniors, and three seniors - the future of Benson golf looks promising.
"The numbers are excellent," Coach Fred Comaduran said. "With so many underclassmen learning golf at a young age, our golf program looks very good for the future."
The Bobcats' first match of the year was hosted by Tanque Verde High School and held at the 49ers course in Tucson in early March.
In addition to Benson and Tanque Verde, Desert Christian and Ajo took to the course. Desert Christian, who finished sixth at the 2009 state tournament, won the four-way, nine-hole competition with a total score of 162, followed by the Bobcats with a 192. Tanque Verde finished with a 206 and Ajo with a 251.
Competing for the Bobcats on the 36-par course were senior Nathan Borders, who shot a 42, junior Nathan McGoffin matched his senior counterpart also with a 42, junior Kjel Gudvangen shot a 53, junior Zach Phillips shot a 55, and sophomore Matt Bivens shot a 57.
"Looking back at this first match, I believe that Borders and McGoffin were right where they should have been at the beginning of the season," Comaduran said. "Competing against a tough team like Desert Christian, we needed to stay focused, forget about being nervous, and just play the course."
The Bobcats hosted their first home match a week later at the San Pedro Valley Golf Course against Bisbee and Desert Christian.
Although the Bobcats were prepared to challenge Desert Christian, who had taken control of the first competition of the season, the strong 30 mile-an-hour winds and the scattered showers that had attacked the area that day stopped the match less than half way through, last Tuesday.
Two days later, with the weather now on their side, the Bobcats returned to the San Pedro Course to take on Thatcher High School. Even though the Bobcats recorded three 49s and a 52 on the course, Thatcher was able to take the match with two 48s and two 51s to win by only one stroke.
"This week we were better range players than we were match players," Comaduran said of the Thatcher match. "We were just not able to record the scores needed to win. Losing by only one stroke shows that we simply need to get a better focus and work on stronger course management."
The Bobcats will be competing again on Saturday in the Thatcher Invitational at the Mount Graham Golf Course.
