Incumbent Precinct 3 Justice of the Peace Joe Knoblock is facing a crowded primary field in his reelection bid.

Knoblock, who has served in the position since 2006, is seeking reelection in the Republican primary facing opponents Bruce Staggs and Eliot Montijo.

In the general election in November, the winner of the Republican primary will face Democrat Marv Sorensen and Independent Virgil Judd.

Early ballots are available through the Cochise County Recorder's office, and will be accepted through Aug. 20. The primary election is Tuesday, Aug. 24.

While Montijo has run a quiet campaign to date, Staggs has been charged with criminal trespassing by the Cochise County Sheriff's Department.

Staggs claims the charges, brought by Sheri Behr, are politically motivated, and promises to present evidence to prove it in court on July 27. The Justice of the Peace Court Precinct 5 in Sierra Vista will hear the case.

Staggs, a St. David resident, is a chiropractor. He has donated or loaned his campaign just over $12,000.

Montijo, a Benson High School graduate, is a local barber, and his resume states he holds an Associate's Degree from Central Arizona College with an emphasis in criminal justice.

Knoblock was elected to the position after serving 11 years with the Cochise County Sheriff's Department.

Montijo and Knoblock are not spending as much on the campaign as Staggs. Montijo reported spending $428 in the second quarter, while Knoblock spent $1,564.56.

Staggs, whose signs outnumber his opponents throughout the San Pedro Valley, has spent $5,313.53.

The Precinct 3 Justice of the Peace makes $94,000 a year.

State race

In the race for governor, while their names will still appear on the primary ballot, Buzz Mills and Dean Martin have withdrawn. Martin and Mills were running against ncumbent Gov. Jan Brewer in the primary. Brewer now faces Matthew Jette.

Martin said he suspended his campaign to deal with President Barack Obama's lawsuit against Arizona for Senate Bill 1070, the budget deficit and the economy still being shaky.

"I feel a contested primary would be a distraction," Martin said. "While a serious debate about the fiscal condition of our state is needed, the heavy hand of the Obama administration will not allow this debate to continue. I fully intend to support the governor in her battle with the Obama Administration and its relentless attack on the people of Arizona."

Mills also suspended his campaign because of SB 1070. While noting major differences in how the economy should be repaired, the former candidate said SB 1070 has taken the focus off job creation and fixing the economy.

After passing SB 1070, Brewer's approval numbers continue to increase and it is likely she will face Democrat Terry Goddard in the November election.

" Why all the emphasis on the petty trespassing matter and on who spent what? Why not a word on where the candidates stand on the issues? "

" For your information, the case of trespassing on Bruce Staggs was dismissed in Justice Court today! "

" And why no post as to the trespassing charge being DISMISSED?????!!!!!! "

" I agree that we need to focus on where each one stands on the issues. That is what makes a good judge. To focus on how much each has or has not spent is just foolishness. As for the trespassing matter, I heard it got thrown out. Are you going to report that? "
