The Benson High School Future Business Leaders of America (FBLA) were pleased with a fifth-place national finish at the annual convention held in Nashville.
Tina Gudvangen, the FBLA sponsor, said it was a great finish for a small 2A school to compete so well at the national level.
"It's tremendous to go to an event with over 7,000 of the top students from across the nation from some of the biggest schools in the nation and for little old Benson to win two team awards. It speaks well of our students, the parents who raise and support them and teachers who have helped them become confident, well-spoken presenters," Gudvangen said.
The entrepreneurship team of Chelsey Layton, Alex Cooper and Dain Dastrup placed along with the community service project presented by Sarah Kading and Layton.
At the state level in May, the entrepreneurship team placed first, winning $450.
The community service project presented by Layton and Kading did more than just win awards during the 2009-2010 school year; it also educated and helped the general public.
In March, the FBLA members got together and placed an estimated 5,000 door hangers explaining recycling options and environmentally sound tips to save money.
In March, Kading, president of FBLA, said the organization wanted to expand on the green program, which won them a first-place prize in state competition last year.
At the time, Layton and Kading and fellow FBLA member Danielle Kunst explained that recycling programs are available in the Benson community, but many residents don't utilize the programs because they aren't aware they exist.
After educating the public, the students competed at the state level in May, and then at the national level last week.
Benson's FBLA program continues to be a leader in education, as the district consistently performs well at state and national competitions annually.
