Coaching shortage? Two Benson coaches not returning to football program

With the 2010 Benson High School football season right around the corner, Head Coach Chris Determan has some holes to fill with two coaches resigning for positions in other school districts.

Besides losing several key seniors from the 2009 2A East Champion squad, Determan is now looking to replace defense coach Casey Woodall, and one-year coach Ovean Moore.

After two seasons of leading the defense, Woodall left the Benson School District for a wrestling job in Payson.

Woodall, who was a high school English teacher in Benson, was clear that wrestling is his passion.

Woodall is also leaving an opening for head coach in the wrestling program. One possible contender is Principal Bryan Bullington, who served as a coach while son Phil Bullington competed with the Bobcats in 2009.

Bullington, along with his son Phil, will be hosting a Bobcat Boot Camp for young wrestlers this summer.

Football coach Moore left the district for a position at Mountain View High School in Tucson.

Moore, who was also the head coach in St. David for two seasons, coached in Benson for a season.

Going with Moore is son Rayvean, who would have come into the 2010 season as a junior receiver and cornerback.

Determan said the Bobcats will do what is needed to fill the two vacant positions, as he expects three coaches to definitely return.

Steve Rennie, who manages the junior varsity program, has already committed along with Lance Wagner.

Ernie Meza has not yet committed to coaching in the new season.

Determan said it was always a team effort among the coaches, and adjustments will be made as the season draws closer.

Practice for the new season is slated to begin Aug. 2.

The Benson Bobcats have become the team to beat in the 2A East for the last three season, holding the conference crown for two consecutive season, keeping the Senney-Lohman traveling trophy, and finishing in the top in 2008 and 2009.

In 2008, the Bobcats made it to the 2A state semi-finals.
