Council OKs purchase of vacuum excavation system

The Benson City Council approved a $44,181.99 purchase of a Vermeer Vac-tron vacuum excavation system Monday night.
Public Works Director Brad Hamilton said the vacuum system is needed for utility system maintenance.
City staff evaluated three different systems and recommended the Vermeer Vac-Tron be-cause it was the best value for the cost.
The system will be used for emergency excavation of broken water, sewer and gas lines and for general maintenance and repair of the lines.
The council also unanimously accepted a grant from the Federal Aviation Administration for improvements at the Benson Municipal Airport.
With the grant, the city costs for construction of a helipad and to reconstruct the airport runway will be $12,225. Without the grant, it would cost the city $24,500.
In other business the council unanimously approved intergovernmental agreements with the Benson and St. David school districts. The agreement permits reciprocal use of the buildings and grounds of the City of Benson and local school districts.
The council also appointed Jane Scholer and Richard Busselle to the Planning and Zoning Commission, but did not renew the appointment of longtime member Walt Schmidt.
No discussion was held over the appointments.
Robert Barnaby was appointed to the Benson Board of Adjustments and Bryan Bowen, Kendell Ryan and Mike Guinane to the Board of Appeals.

" Grant or no grant. The city is still spending taxpayer funds for a airport that is only used by a very few Benson citizens. The airport that will not make money for the foreseeable future ,but costs taxpayers more money each year to maintain.
If I build a race car will the city build a race track? Same concept. "

Maybe the city bought the vacuum excavation system to get rid of Kendrick and his mother before his case against the city goes to court. "
