BHS cheer-dance squad to host cheerleading camp

Benson High School cheer and dance squad is holding a cheer camp Saturday, Aug. 21, 9 a.m. to noon, at the high school gym.

The camp is open to youngsters 4 to 14 years old. Cost is $10 and includes snack and performance at half time at the first home varsity football game.

Eagles spaghetti dinner for Children's Crisis Center


The Fraternal Order of Eagles Club invites the public to a charity spaghetti dinner Saturday, Aug. 21, 4:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m., at the Aerie, 750 E. 4th St., Benson.

The $7 dinner fee includes spaghetti, salad, garlic bread, coffee or tea and dessert.

All proceeds benefit Cochise County Children's Crisis Center. Donation of needed item and get $1 reduced from cost of plate.

Items sought from donations are for boys and girls 0-17 years of ages and include pajamas, sizes 2 to 10; sweats, all sizes; slippers, all sizes; bras, size 32-38; flip-flops, all sizes; hygiene products, including tooth brushes, brushes combs and deodorants; toys and games, including sports equipment, flash cards, bilingual books and tapes, and arts and craft supplies.

Items sought for the facility's outreach program include, water bottles, granola bars, convenience foods, backpacks, socks and underwear, jackets, blankets, trial size baby wipes, and trial size shampoo and conditioner. A need exists for transitional housing needs like gently used household items and furniture.

Cochise College Benson GED class registration

Registration for GED classes through Cochise College Adult Education will be held Monday, Aug. 23, Tuesday, Aug. 24 and Thursday, Aug. 26, 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. at Cochise College Benson Center off State Route 90.

GED classes will be held Monday, Tuesday and Thursday, 5:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m., and open to all levels. There is no charge. For information call (520) 515-5306 or toll free 1-800-966-7943 Exit. 3304.

Senior property valuation freeze deadline nears

Application filing deadline for the senior property valuation freeze option is Wednesday, Sept. 1.

This allows property valuation of a primary home to be frozen for three years, and may remain frozen as long as the homeowner re-qualifies every three years.

Homeowners must be 65, lived in the home a minimum of two years, and home owner's annual total income must be below $32,352 for single owner or $40,440 if two or more owners. Income based on total income from all sources, taxable and non-taxable, and must include all owners on the property title. Application must be made on the Department of Revenue form DOR 82104. Forms available from the County Assessor's Office. Call the Cochise County Assessors Office at (520) 432-8650.

DNA paternity testing at County Health Dept.

The Cochise County Health Department is now offering DNA paternity testing at all five locations and has joined with the DNA Diagnostics Center (DDC), known for trustworthy, confidential and accurate results.

Clinics will be offering DNA paternity testing during all normal business hours.

In Benson, the service is offered each Tuesday and Thursday and on alternating Fridays from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the county health department at 126 W. 5th St.

Benson Area Food Bank's child-box program ongoing

The Benson Area Food Bank will continue the child food-box program although the state of Arizona funding stopped on June 30. The board of directors has voted to continue it as long as local funding supports it. In addition to the current child food box contents, peanut butter and jelly will be added for boxes for families with children age 3-5. One gallon of milk will be added to food boxes of qualified families for older children ages 6 through 17.

'Faces' art show on

display at City Hall Gallery

"Faces," an art show is on display in City Hall Gallery. These are framed paintings, drawings and photographs by local artists depicting human or animal faces. There are 26 pieces of art by nine area artists.

For shows at City Hall, a Call to Artists is put out about three weeks in advance. There are no fees associated with showing work at the City Hall Gallery, but the work is juried and artists are encouraged to become members of the San Pedro River Arts Council. Exhibits typically are displayed for two months. City Hall Gallery will be open from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturdays through Aug, 21 for the "Faces" show."

"Stage West; Old and New Visions of the American West" at City Hall Gallery in Benson. Show dates are from Aug. 22 - Oct. 30.

This is a juried show with a western theme. Framed (wire and screw eyes only, no brackets please), ready to hang, paintings, drawings, photography or mixed media will be accepted.

Send jpg images and include name, title of the piece, medium, dimensions and the price to Sylvia@sprarts.org. Each artist may submit as many as four pieces, and they must not have previously been exhibited at the City Hall Gallery. There are no fees associated with this show, and there are no prizes, but exhibitors must be members of the San Pedro River Arts Council (see the Web site at www.sprarts.org or send an email to sylvia@sprarts.org).

Last date to submit work is Aug. 18. Accepted work must be delivered to the City Hall Gallery, 120 W. 6th St., Benson, on Saturday, Aug. 21, from 1 p.m.- 4 p.m.

The San Pedro River Arts Council is keeping a list of artists who may want to exhibit at "Wall Space" galleries.

These are businesses that have agreed that art would be a nice contribution to their walls. The council is also seeking "Wall Spaces." If interested contact Sylvia Burnside at sylvia@sprarts.org.

VFW fundraising

dinner on Friday

VFW Post 6271, 233 E. 5th St., is holding its weekly Friday, [Aug. 20] fundraising dinner from 5 p.m. to 6 p.m., serving chicken-fried steak, mashed potatoes, gravy, salad and roll Cost is $7, public welcome.

For takeout or more information call 586-2197. VFW bingo hours have changed. Sunday Bingo is now held at 2 p.m. Kitchen closed for summer.

American Legion sets

Sept. 9 meeting at VFW

American Legion Post 45 Vicente Manzo will meet on the second Thursday of the month, Sept. 9, at the VFW on 5th Street at 6:30 p.m. For more information contact American Legion Commander Frank Taticek by calling 586-7273.

Fraternal Order of

Eagles' activities posted

The Eagles' Auxiliary meets on the first and third Mondays with the Aeries meeting on the first and third Tuesdays. Trustees also meet every Tuesday. There are also tacos on Tuesday from 4:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m., bingo on Wednesday at 6 p.m., cards sold at 5:30 p.m. The kitchen is open at 5 p.m. for bingo. Fish frys are held every other Friday at 4:30 p.m. but will not be held in August.

FOE rents out their hall for banquets, birthday and or anniversary parties and receptions. For more information call 586-3043.

County Health Dept. back-to-school shots

The Cochise County Health Department is announcing its Back to School Immunization Clinics for the summer of 2010 at all health department locations and at additional locations in the community.

Parents are reminded to bring shot records. Shots administered at Benson's branch of the health department are from 8 a.m. to 11 a.m. and 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. on the first, second and fourth Tuesday of each month, 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. on the third Tuesday of the month.

Marine Corps League

meeting days posted

Monthly meetings of the Cpl. George Salcido Detachment of the Marine Corps League will be held at VFW Hall, 233 E. 5th St. at 6:30 p.m. on the third Thursday of each month.
