A rapid downpour wreaked havoc on Benson Tuesday evening as emergency crews were kept hopping with reports of a one-vehicle crash on Interstate 10, downed power lines in midtown and a swift water rescue on S. Prickly Pear Avenue.
Benson Volunteer Fire Dept. personnel responded to the wash adjacent to Wal-Mart at about 5 p.m., after an elderly male apparently tried driving his late model Ford Mustang across the running wash. The force of the water brought the vehicle toward the wash. The man was able to get out of the car and waited as firefighters pulled him to safety.
He did not appear to be seriously injured and was speaking to firefighters. Healthcare Innovations ambulance service was on hand to transport the driver.

" I can't wait to see how old the "elderly driver" is; not too many elders drive late model Mustangs! "

" Do you have any news on the weather from 8/24/10, the day of the storm? I have heard many reports of a funnel cloud, in fact my neighbor saw it come thru my backyard. I tend to believe it because of all the damage to my property and that of my neighbors. What was the wind speed etc. It seems there is no news to be found for the Benson weather conditions on tuesday. "

" DI- I saw the other day what looked like a funnell cloud over Pomerene by the cascabel mountains. "

" Highly unlikely of funnel/tornado. Arizona statewide that day reported storms with wind damages in some areas wind gusts in excess of 90mph and damages very similar to Benson. Strong gust fronts and downbursts were associated with the storm as reported by NWS and Doppler radar. Not completly ruling out a funnel but the conditions were more favorable for Downbursts. The damage from a downburst can look similar to and be just as bad as a small tornado. "
