The City of Benson is spending $5,620 for several members of the City Council, staff and some of their spouses to attend the 2010 League of Arizona Cities and Towns conference this week.

Mayor Mark Fenn and council members John Lodzinski, David Lambert and Lori McGoffin went to the conference, which started Aug. 24.

McGoffin, Lambert and Fenn also took their spouses to the event.

Not attending the conference were Vice Mayor Toney King and council members Al Sacco and Jo Deen Boncquet.

City Manager Glenn Nichols is also attending, along with City Clerk Vicki Vivian, Deputy Clerk Danna Judd and Tourism Director Bob Nilson.

Vivian, Judd and Nilson will take care of the booth decorated to highlight the City of Benson.

Most of the costs for the four-day event are for hotel rooms.

Council members are staying at the Renaissance Glendale Hotel for $119 a night, while Vivian and staff are booked at the Hampton Inn for $79.

Mayor Fenn said the conference is good for elected officials to attend.

"The benefit I have derived is the interaction with other cities and towns," he said. "You get to see what works and what doesn't work. You also find out that we're not doing too badly."

Fenn said the conferences and seminars are also helpful in educating council members, as well as giving them an opportunity to interact with the state's legislative leaders.

Besides hotel rooms, the cost of the four-day event also includes conference fees, where Benson officials are participating in conference such as the Glendale Regional Public Safety Training Center, ballot propositions, economic development and reforming Arizona's revenue system, and a luncheon with Gov. Jan Brewer.

However, it's not all business, as attendees are also invited to play in a golf tournament.

Special programs are also established for spouses attending the event.
