Responding to veteran's burial talk
This is in response to the article in last week's paper concerning local veteran given proper burial.
Laverne Lebert was a member of Post 6271, where he spent many afternoons with his comrades. Per Richardson's Mortuary, the VFW was never contacted.
If they would have been contacted I know the Commander Dave Hansen would have made arrangements with the Honor Guard to transfer the ashes to the Southern Arizona Veterans Memorial Cemetery.
The remarks that made me upset was that no one wanted this veteran! Mr. Lebert had a son and many friends at the VFW who did care. Lou was not buried at Fort Huachuca; he was buried at Southern Arizona Veterans Memorial Cemetery. For those veterans who have not made arrangements for their last resting spot, I would suggest they contact the Southern Arizona Veterans Memorial Cemetery for their arrangements, please call: 520-458-7144 or go online to their Web site: www.savmcf.org.
As a veteran myself we have earned the right for a free burial and headstone.

" When my husband was failing I went to SAVMC to take a look. I was very impressed then and remain so today. It is a lovely and serene area well suited to our heroes.
My only regret is that I was unaware of "Bugles Across America" at the time so "Taps" was a recording.
If time is growing short for the veteran I sincerely suggest checking out both with family members. And remember that the burial or niche will cost you nothing.
If you look around you'll see that many of those resting at SAVMC waited past their time to to finally rest there. "
