The Cochise County Board of Supervisors canceled a number of elections last week, some due to a lack of interest in filling vacant seats on a variety of boards.

In some of the districts, no one filed for candidacy.

In canceling the elections, supervisors were required to appoint those who filed for candidacy.

School districts

Seats on most of the school boards in the county were appointed, since the candidate numbers equaled the vacant seats. Many other appointments will be left up to the governing board and county superintendent.

In the Elfrida Elementary School District No. 12, there were four candidates for four seats - three four-year terms and one two-year term. The four-year appointees are Jamie Mahaney, Janice Owen and James Fletcher with Pat Edie appointed to the two-year term.

McNeal Elementary School District No. 55 saw the appointments of Margaret Harding and Patsy Rineer.

Joan Cardona was appointed to the vacant seat on the governing board of Double Adobe.

The Palominas Elementary School District has three appointees out of three candidates: Carolyn Calderon, Bo Hall and Vicky Pickett.

Appointees to Pom-erene District No. 64 are Michael Brogan and Bonnie Wilson.

Monica Bidegain, Eon Power, Sr. and Ruby Sipes were appointed to San Simon District No. 18.

Tombstone Unified School District No. 1 had one candidate for two four-year seats who was named, and that was Lillian Hritz. The second seat will be an appointment after the board convenes at the first meeting in January.

Three open seats on Willcox Unified School District No. 13 will be filled by appointees Debra Ellis, Jan Kortsen and Larry Schultz.

Rucker Transportation District No. 66 will have two appointees who filed to run: Tyler Cass Clemson and Steven Smith.

Cochise Technology District No. 1 had three of four seats appointed. They were: Gary Schaefer, Rose Aguallo and Clint Sanborn. The fourth seat will be determined in the November run-off between Joanne Coppola and Lisa K. Reames.

Cochise Community College District Board Precinct 2 candidate Don Hudgins was appointed as the only candidate for the one vacant seat.

Apache District No. 42 has two seats available, but only one candidate, Ed Ashurst. He was appointed to the school board and the other vacancy will be left up to appointment by the county school superintendent.

In the Creek District No. 53, the supervisors approved the appointment of Judith Leiker, John Lind and Jerry Carlson.

Benson Unified School District No. 9 candidates Frank Maldonado and Kelly Johnson were appointed.

Frank Flanders and Kristine Carper were appointed to Cochise Elementary District No. 26 governing board to fill two vacant seats.

Water districts

Gary Cowsar was the only candidate for the one opening on the Bowie Water Improvement District.

The Pomerene Water District Board also had no candidates for the one vacant seat. The board will appoint someone.

Two seats on the San Simon Water District failed to attract two candidates, and two people will be appointed later on.

The St. David Water District Board had its three vacant seats appointed. They were Albert Duff, Reg Garavito and Jeremy Wiley.

Fire districts

Debra Juarez was appointed to the vacant seat on the Bowie Fire District Board.

For the Fry Fire District, James Barnett and Duane Brofer were appointed to two of the three vacant seats. The third will be an appointment by the board at a later date.

Mescal/J6 Fire District had five seats open, but only three candidates - Mary Bowen, Mark Lee and Mary McCool. The other two seats will be filled at a later date by the board.

The PBW Fire District Board had no candidates for one open position, so it will be filled by an appointment of the board members at a later date.

Two vacant seats on the Pirtleville Fire District had no candidates and the board will handle appointments later.

The Pomerene Fire District also had no one interested in running for the seat, so it will remain open until existing board members appoint someone.

Two seats on the San Jose Fire District Board are still up for grabs, as no one filed for candidacy. The existing board will make the appointments.

The St. David Fire District did not get any candidates for the vacant seat, so the current board will make an appointment.

Three vacancies on the Sunnyside Fire District Board had no candidates. Special districts director Tom Schelling was appointed as the administrator of the district.

Schelling will also be the administrator of the Babocomari Fire District Board which also had no filings to fill three vacant seats.

The Whetstone Fire District Board had two vacant seats but only one candidate. Jerry Hopper was appointed to the board. The other seat will be filled by board appointment.

Hospital districts
