The St. David Tigers picked up where they left off in the 2009 regular season Friday night, winning the season opener 47-0.

Tyler Davis led the victory over Superior, throwing for 307 yards, and rushing for 74.

The Tigers made a big statement in the first quarter, as Davis hit Nathan Mayberry on a 10-yard pass for the first touchdown, and then connected with Paul Kartchner for a 37-yard score.

In the second, Davis again found Kartchner for a 70-yard strike, and then connected with Braden Murray for a 23-yard score.

Before halftime, Davis found the end zone on the keeper from one yard out, giving the Tigers 34-0 at halftime.

In the third quarter, Davis continued the air attack, hitting Kartchner for a third touchdown from 25 yards out.

The defense finished the game on a high note, with Preston Goodman recovering a fumble for a 20-yard score.

Due to the Arizona Interscholastic Association 42-point mercy rule, the game ended in the third quarter.

On defense, Mayberry led with two interceptions returned for 40 yards, and Anthony Prestley led the Tigers with 6 solo tackles and 6 assists.

On Friday, the Tigers will travel to Gila Bend and will host the first home game of the season, Friday, Sept. 10, at 7 p.m. against Ajo.

" uh... Thelma, the AIA "42 point mercy rule" has not been in effect for several years. This game went the distance. Have you ever been to a 1A football game? Have you not seen some of the 1A scores? "
